For the purpose of maintaining everyone's numbers, comments should be posted to the image (not this thread).

Also, the amazing copy/paste functionality of modern computers means the comment can easily be in both places ...

I realize that posting the comment in both image comment box and discussion thread is redundant, but I'm hoping this discussion will be a continuing thread.

Uh, I also posted in both places, though with slightly modified text to match the context.

Hi Niall. I see you almost came in dead last with this (better luck next time). I love that you're shooting with your iPhone & have such an expressive style. I was your 10. Why? I admire photographs that do not pretend to be objective.

Take this Everyman descending the stairs, for example. At first glance, I did not see him. I noticed his coordinates. There are many people in this world, unknown, unnamed, moving along the edges of life. It's expected that a portrait will show the subject clearly, meeting our eyes through the lens. But not every spirit can or will submit to being captured that way. The untamed Everyman is honestly captured here, & I admire. Thank you.

I have to say, one of the biggest shocks of coming back from my latest 4-year absence is the complete lack of comments. It hasn't dwindled at the same rate that votes and views have dwindled at; it's disappeared almost entirely, and far beyond the other proportions of this site's gradual decline.

This time a little over a decade ago, one of my shots received 290 votes during the contest, and that entry has 106 comments. Sure, voting numbers have dropped; but at that ratio we should still be seeing between 16 and 25 comments per entry, when entries receive 40 to 75 votes as it has been recently. Instead I'm averaging two comments per entry... and you can bet that one of those two will be the wonderfully persistent sidpixel because I almost always click the "in depth critique" button, and make sure to write enough in my description to justify that. In fact, as far as I can see, not once in 2016 have I received more words in comments than I wrote myself to explain the process of my photo.

I too would very much prefer to think that welcoming critique is a core staple of the DPC community... but I'm happy to be a pragmatist here, and desperate times call for desperate measures. I'm willing to do anything; if it'll get me more feedback then please get my name on the list: Riot.

But I would also encourage all of you never to hold back; get out there and explain exactly why you gave someone the vote you gave. Explaining tens and ones is all well and good, but it's really the unexplained fives that are the worst! If you like it, why not a higher mark? If you hate it, why not a lower mark? If you think about it, someone scoring a five has twice as much to explain as someone scoring a one or a ten; you ought to explain both what you did like and what could be improved. But I seem to see almost no comments whatsoever from the middle voters.

I like the way it turned out, the doorway's confined space makes an unusual frame for the light, which seems unusually low to the ground. The building lines complement the graffiti. And the color is gorgeous. Well done.

Or maybe the absence of a comment is a comment in itself. For me, the middle scores often go to images that yes, I can see met the challenge and are okay technically - so they don't offend me - but that fail to call forth any emotion whatsoever from me. When I comment, which is not often enough, I do fall into the "no comment on the vast average" category.

This is a good place to stretch your commenting muscles, Nikki. Pick one of those no-reaction shots & describe your experience.

I'll try again. I usually end up just saying, I just didn't like this. For me, it fell flat.

And the comment I left on the thread just now:
I love the dancing light and colors behind the chorus line. I gave it a 6 and almost bumped it, but for me the foreground flower heads were too dark and heavy and static - they weighed it down where I wanted them to lift it up - or at least live up to the airiness and movement of the background.

It's a lot more helpful if you can at least try to explain what it's missing, or what you'd do differently. Comments like "I don't like this, but I can't be bothered to analyse my inner state enough to communicate to you why" are only marginally better than no comments at all. Although I'd still take them over the deathly silence we now have otherwise.

On the occasions when I vote low and I can clearly see something I would improve in the image, I try to make a point of calling that out in clear terms. The main reason I personally don't comment more, is that my feeling on the vast majority of images I vote low is either "I find the subject matter is entirely unappealing and unworthy of photography" or "what I would have done differently is: I have just deleted this photograph" and communicating those feelings hasn't previously been well received here. But perhaps the members of this thread would be happy to have such critique too? I certainly would, again, rather get those comments than complete silence.

But I still don't feel this thread is a useful measure; the valuable comments come during challenges, without personal bias or comparison to an existing portfolio, at the moment of the decision point of the vote. You pressed "7" - I want to know WHY, and precisely why not a 6 or an 8. I fear that a thread like this gives permission to defer those comments to a later date when they're less representative and far less helpful.

I also fear it risks artificially limiting useful critique those who have taken the time to find this hidden corner of the forums and participate here. Whereas comments should be available for all challenge participants, whether they're active in the forums or not.

Hmm, that is what I unterstood, when this thread started:

Of course anybody may give comments to any picture she/he feels motivated to!

But there are commenters who had unpleasant experiences in the past with photogs who wouldn't accept comments as personal opinions but bullied with PMs and such. This thread was meant to bring back those commenters, who quit commenting because of those who rather want some ego-stroking than honest words.

Everybody volunteering here is giving her/his consent to accept critical comments without whining

That's all about imho (but maybe I'm misinterpreting, than please somebody correct me)

This thread is for commenters.

C O M M E N T E R S!

This thread has a list of comment-friendly photographers.

Everyone could use a little practice finding a way to comment on those photos that don't do much for them.

That's my understanding also Barbara. A real, elaborate and constructive critique and not only praise which can appear in a lot of other threads and during the voting time.
In this particular forum people will not get offended by a comment. That's it

I suggested that we elaborate on the understanding of a topic also, after the rollover. I was absolutely convinced that the Impressionism challenge for instance will end up in a different approach of dealing with filters, thus a former thread during the voting was closed by SC.
