Well, I got my first set of strobes today. I'm so happy with them. I had never used strobes before and it was really exciting to get them.

First thing I did was ran over to a friends house and took pictures of his daughter who needed head shots for a resume she is submitting for a play she will be auditioning for. I hope she will be happy with at least a few of these that I took tonight.

Please give me your comments and advice!!! The modeling lights were excellent for being able to see if there was going to be a reflection of the strobe in here glasses. As you can see, the first few I didn't notice and then I caught on and got much better catching it before snapping the shot and asked her to adjust her head so that we didn't get the reflection.

I'm excited to know what everyone thinks!!!

Thanks!
Bill

P.S. - Oh yea, I left my 20D in the bag and used my Digital Rebel for these shots. :o) Like I said, eventhough I have a 20D, I still love my Digital Rebel and think it is an awesome camera! :o)

Edited to add P.S. statement.

Nice shots, Bill! I like the "less posed" pics the best but they are all nice - of course, your subject is a cutie pie and that always helps, right!? For your first time using strobes, I think you did a bang up job!

Curious to know more about your set-up... how many strobes? Did you use a handheld meter or the camera's?

Thanks!

I used one 135ws strobe with a soft box and one 35ws strobe into an umbrella for fill. Here is the set I got off of ebay. I think I got an excellent deal! I didn't know what to expect for $300 but I am super happy and so glad I got them. If for nothing else they are going to be great to learn with.

I do not have a meter so I just set the camera on Manual and took a few test shots. Took about 5 shots to set the exposure right.

Thanks again for your comments!!!

hey bill - i assume these are the strobes you were looking for advice on? looks like they work just fine :) ..

One question: how are you triggering them with your rebel>?

Wow Bill, I'm impressed. Tell me something ... it seems like $300 is a pretty good price for all that you got. How do you feel about it? Is the quality good, do you feel like you got what you paid for? I would like to get some strobes too, but have always expected I would pay about $1500 just to get started! So I'm really curious as to what you think of these.

Hey, Mag! I'm using the IR wireless trigger that came in the auction deal. I also ordered a second one from the guy for $29.00 so that I could have on on my DR and my 20D at the same time in case I choose to shoot with both cameras. It's really cool. Just fits right on to the hotshoe of the camera. I'm really happy with it!

David,

I must say that I was skeptical at first too. I was just looking for something to learn with and that's why I went with the less expensive kit I could find on eBay that had everything I wanted. I knew I wanted the IR wireless trigger. I also knew that I wanted 3 lights, 2 fairly powerful and one to use as fill and for either hair or backlighting.

I must say that I am very impressed with the whole kit that I received. The guy that is selling these on ebay is super! He answered all of my questions and was very, very nice! Super eBay seller!

The stands are very nice and the lights all seem to be excellent quality. For $300 I am extremely happy and couldn't have asked or expected more. I highly recommend these for anyone that is just starting out and wants a starter kit. :o)

The only thing I was unsure of was the watt seconds that everyone keeps talking about. Well, these shots were taken with the subject at about 6-8 feet from the strobes and I was shooting at 125/s at either f9 or f11 and I still had to turn the strobe down to 50% power. The smaller fill strobe with the umbrella does not give the ability to decrease power but I really didn't need to for that one anyway. I haven't even unpacked the second 135ws strobe yet. All of these were taken with just one 135ws strobe and the fill flash strobe. :o)

Thanks!
Bill

All sounds impressive and I"d say you got a Spankin' good deal!

Congratulations!

These photos are quite good, I myself am not a fan of muslins (sp) so the background choice is iffy for me..but she looks very cute and the light is very clear.
Tell her we wish her luck!

Excellent shots Bill. A good model helps, and I think you've got one. But your progress as a photographer is impressive. Keep up the great work!

After looking at your pictures, I decided to go ahead and purchase the kit from Ebay. Thanks so much for the link and also for all the positive information on the lights. I really hope they will be a good starter's kit for me. How long did it take for them to arrive? I can't wait! Please post more pictures taken with your new lights.

Kristina,

Thanks for your kind words. I wish I had the time today to have taken more photos with my new lights. :-\ I hope to be able to play with them over the weekend. :o) Time permitting of course.

I'm sure you are going to love them. The guy selling them, Joe, is super nice and very helpful.

I can't wait to see what you are going to do with your lights.

Thanks again!
Bill
