The happy ones, not the imaginary ones in the woods(which really signify irrational fear of things, in an allegorical societal sense), minimal.

Happy or scary, I object to the concept. Let's not give more publicity to this perversity.

Hard to find the happy ones. But I could get all the creepy ones I wanted -- Busch garden goes majorly creepy with clowns at this time of year! I wonder if they're backing off, or really playing it up.

I never really thought much about clowns, either way. But Ronald McDonald has to be one of the creepiest looking. I always did think that!

Go metaphorical or tangential in that instance. Show us "clowns of the animal kingdom"

If not clowns- "things that stand for other things that scare us"

Or "scary things-the unknown"

Having a friend as a professional clown since he was 19 and over 40yrs He has traveled the world and recently spent one month in China performing. He performed for Ringling Bros. for years as well. While he was out there this clown thing broke out.

He came home to cancelled events and gigs, loss of work with media sensationalizing it all. It is pretty sad time for the real clowns who do what they are meant to do, but still kids get it.

I kinda like this challenge, many ways we can go with this. Bring back what clowning really is and the real stuff after all is what they were born to do. Make people laugh.

Kids get it

With Halloween approaching, I don't think it's a good idea to promote clowns of any kind.

10 SCARY CLOWNS THAT WILL MAKE YOU CRY
From a video game villain to one of the country's most notorious serial killers, these scary clowns are the opposite of funny.

As far as going for something metaphorical or tangential... there are too many voters who vote narrowly, rather than open their minds to creative interpretations. I don't have clowns to photograph, except the scary ones at the upcoming Halloween. And, I won't do that.

There are many other, more wonderful challenge suggestions with broad appeal. To select "clowns" as a challenge topic, at this time, would be a scary choice.

there are always some street artists in Taipei City dressed up as clowns.
They are really funny and attract many kids.
I would love to have this topic as challenge but can it wait for next month.

I get to go to Halloween Horror Night at Universal soon - so excited - I love all the scary getups. (Maybe a bit neutral to clowns - thanks Steven King's It for that slight discomfort.). I don't like gore - but give me a monster and I'm all smiles.

Maybe instead of clowns just make it a Halloween speed challenge?

People seem scared o9f imaginary clowns, so I withdraw my suggestion and suggest:

Monsters, real and imagined. Standard editing.

Good clowns don't have a monopoly on clowning and never have.

"But the fact that some geniuses were laughed at does not imply that all who are laughed at are geniuses. They laughed at Columbus, they laughed at Fulton, they laughed at the Wright brothers. But they also laughed at Bozo the Clown."

I know its better, but after thinking about it, I really don't see what is wrong with having a clown challenge.

Can't you see it plays into a fake hysteria about the fears in our collective imaginations, fueled by ridiculous doom and gloom authoritarian demagoguery?

Either one is find, but just as long as we all agree there is no rational reason not to have a clown challenge.

Clown sightings: hysteria in the US reaches a fever pitch

I'm strongly against our photo contest site participating in the hysteria that is widespread and growing. It's dangerous. Someone may be seriously hurt. <<<("...rational reason not to have a clown challenge") Okay? Why not wait until the hysteria subsides, or, are you all interested in feeding the hysteria while the subject's hot? Go for it next Spring or mid-Summer. Or, better yet, go for a side-challenge.

Because the subject is hot-its a good time to explore it. I agree that we should all dress as clowns and take pictures on the edge of the woods.

You have created enough of a controversy to put doubt in heads that matter, and squashed it, so don't worry.

It's a dangerous time to incite violence. Just leave the clowns off DPC, until societies and terrorisms calm down. It's not funny!
