Hello DPChallengers,

I have to choose two of my elephant pictures for the colored picture comepetition of the Bangkok Photographic Society's November 15 session. I am posting my six better pictures. I need an advice from you guys which one should I enter. Some may look good in BW...which ones.

The dimension format is 8 x 10 and since I am used to 8 x 12, I had a hard time cropping the pictures.

Your comments and suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

(In case some of you are interested about having a DPCPrint of a certain shot, please inform me.)

WOW, these pictures are incredible, especially the bright and vivid colors against the elephants. They are all fantastic. I couldn't pick a favorite but I do like the last one with the boy/man jumping

Is there a topic that you are suppose to shot or anything you want?

Ladder, Hills and Bridge are my favorites. To be honest they are all simply fantastic. Is there a theme or any criteria for the shoot?

Manny, those are all so stunning I don't know HOW you can pick just 2. I just love them all! I do have to say, though, that the first one and the third one really have great "lines" in the way they draw you into the photograph. I love the fourth and fifth ones, but it's the elephant's tushies and that may not be the end they would like to see. Two and six are beautiful, but just not quite as "WOW" to me. Then again, I'm just a novice who loves to look at your work! :o)

I have to submit any 5 colored and any 5 BW photos during our two-day excursion to Sangklaburi. I have a lot of other shots from other sessions and many portrait shots of children so I will choose only two from this elephant session. No themes whatsoever. Just any shot taken during that trip.

All of them are great but I think Bridge and Hills stand out. Bridge is nice because it shows the elephants a bit more, but the pic might not be as clear as you want it if you print it at 8x10, it's tough to tell from a web pic.

My personal favorite is Hills. I like the color, the way the photo leades the eye, and it gives a nice sense of life.

Hills was the first one that stood out to me too. Great job on all of them, but I LOVE the composition and flow of hills?

ladder and bridge. I think I've said it before, but I will say it again, What are you doing teaching??? I want to see photos like this in National Geographic! Aren't you interested in being a NG photographer or doing more professional work? You are extremely talented. :o)

Thanks for the vote of confidence. Frankly, I wouldn't have been able to buy my camera and my lens if I don't teach. Can't wait for me to finish my six year (this is the start of my 4th) of teaching in this school so that I can take a sabbatical. Then I can devote more time to photography. But looking at the shots of many wonderful photographers in this site brings me back to the ground. I still have a lot to learn after learning so much from many people here.

Anyway, still can't make up my mind as to which shot? I have my personal preference but knowng that ther were over 30 photographers on that trip, I am looking for something that is so different otherwise, it will be dismissed as just One of those shots.

holy crap these shots are good!

I personally prefer the shots up close ... feels more like your right there enjoying the ride (2 and 4). I like #4 the best.

How do you choose.....they're amazing Manny!! For me the ones with the extra kapow factor are #1 Ladder and #3 Traffic, composition/leading lines of them is outstanding.

All good pictures but the first and last stand out among the rest (ladder and bridge), great work, nice location :-)

I REALLY like the first three; some excellent work, as normal, Manny.

I would try each of them in B&W. I think you're looking for good contrast and easily definable subjects for a B&W - it's sometimes easy to merge everything into one black and white muddle. Also, I'd use channel mixer to have most control over how they're converted.

Many many thanks Paul. I use the normal grayscale conversion when converting a photo and it turns out bluish. I am desperately in need of a better way of doing it. Comments.

Manny, in color, use LADDER as #1 and BRIDGE as #2.

These are stunning photographs in color...do not be tempted by the retro B/W fad.

Marvelous photographs...stirs travel urges of long past.

I think the best two are ladder and hills. I don't know if it is possible but it would be great if you had a tiny bit more space on the left of ladder to include the elephants head that is cropped off. Hills is just about perfect how it is and I think the fact that none of the elephants faces are visible makes the shot even more interesting because the focus is clearly on the people (I don't mean that in a technical way...lol). I also really like bridge. The composition of that stands out as the most structured yet the person jumping breaks out of this structured feeling. The only problem is that the area behind his foot looks a bit odd as if he could possibly be stepping on another elephant (it's clear that he's not...but you know..some people...) Hope those comments help. I'm being really picky. In reality I think these are all gorgeous photos and I would be overjoyed to have taken any of them myself. Oh, and being a teacher is a very worthy profession, something you should be proud of. Good luck deciding.
