On my wildlife submission.. most people seemed to like it but a lot of the comments said it needed more light, more "pop", was bland, needed more color. What could I have done in PS to make it a better photo?

I would soooo very much appreciate it if someone would do some PS work on it to make it better and let me know what you did?

Thanks for any help I get :)

Curves:
Point 1) Input 157, Output 202
Point 2) Input 115, Output 129
Point 3) Input 67, Output 44

Hue/Saturation:
Saturation +17

Not very hard actually. Curves has become my new best friend. It lets you work on contrast, brightness, saturation...all at once. I usually need to do some saturating later though too to make it "pop."

Just cranked up the saturation and used levels to give you some better contrast and range.

I just love doing things like this. Virtual photographer. Base layer transparency(boost saturation) Second layer, ambience(soft focus filter) erased face on 2nd layer.

I am totally in awe here. The difference is unbelieveable. You made my lion gorgeous!

Thanks so much for your responses. I see I have so much to learn about PS. I'm certainly going to start practicing with this lion now that I see how much improvement can be made.

You guys are great :) I LOVE this site!

I like doing this shit too :)
I like dark pictures and I have darkened it, burn the grass, brightness-contrast, colors balance, desaturate colors, sharpen

I am just amazed at what you guys can do with PS. You've made a believer of me. I've put Photo Shop on a back burner and used Paint Shop Pro because I know that program and its easier for me.. but it doesn't begin to compare if these examples are what can be done with PS.

I have lots of shots of this old guy so I have a lot to practice on. He lives at a drive-through animal park and you have to keep the windows up in the lion area so this was shot through my car window.

He has a new female companion now so he may be getting livlier. So far the new female companion seems to like hanging out with the old female companion and the male sits across the field watching them both. :)

Thanks again for all the help!

PS is fun, CS is even more fun :) I used to play with photobundled6 cos it was easier to use but am currently playing with CS, a much steeper learning curve but I reckon it will (eventually) be worth it.

My attempt, a rather poor mask but you get the idea - thought it would look better seperating the background.

Here's my try:
- Adjusted curves
- Adjusted Hue/Saturation individually
- Applied Unsharp Mask

And not to miss the fun, here's my rendition:

Easiest way to do a direct comparison, is open yours, then open mine in a new window, and while they are both in the taskbar, click from one to the other.

Next!

It doesn't look too bad as a quadtone either.

(I like to be different.)

Went a slightly different way:

Slight contrast boost in curves.
Channel mixer to convert to B&W
Custom curves to platinum tone the image.
duplicated the result, added the original over the top.
Masked the original with the green channel.
Changed blend mode to colour, decreased opacity.
Duplicated this colour layer, changed the mask to focus on the lions head.

Dodged/ burned the edges and face to darken the corners, brighten the face.
Gaussian blurred the masks then added some noise to reduce banding.

Please post thumbnail links to your photos rather than fullsize images. It makes it easier for the dialup users, plus it seems that the host you are using is pretty slow.

It breaks my heart to hear you say that psp isn't as good as ps.
Here's one from psp.

Auto saturation normal/strong
dup layer
base usm .5/100/47
dup, soft focus 47%, erase face
merge
curves, high point moved up a bit
could have used saturation strong/strong for deeper color

I can't do any better than these excellent examples at creating a more realistic photo, so I went another direction entirely and tried converting them to "illustrations" as might be used in a children's book.

how do I make it into a thumbnail?

10/13/2004 10:49:12 PM · #23
Here's mine...to be different.

Two layers, gaussian blur on top layer, sharpening bottom layer, quadoned with blacks and browns. Flattened, bit of a curve adjustment. Nothing too special.
