Because we want to see if we get stronger registered user participation with the 2-week period. That would eventually translate into more paid members signing up.

Well I joined this year because of a thread via YouTube. I'm not sure how many joined this year (paying) that is but I first checked it out from curiosity. We may should do a little PR with our own Facebook pages if we're looking for members.

Tate this would make one think that a beginner level photographer is not wanted and all you want to see are pro photographs. We have to start somewhere and the site reads all levels are welcome. Is this site not for learning?

My main goal as SC is to a part of the initiative to improve this site. Believe me, this is one of many ideas that we are hoping improve the quantity and quality of images we see here.

This site is all about learning and improving -- for all levels of photographers. I don't think it was Tate's intention at all to exclude beginning level photographers in favor of more experienced shooters. I think he was just suggesting that, novices and veterans alike could use the extra week to improve their entry (extra time to plan, experiment, reshoot, etc.)

Haha. Yes, I know when I participated in DPL the first time one major way I improved was having the ability to accept comments/criticisms and then reshoot. That taught me a lot and my submission quality was definitely higher because of re-shooting. Even now I'll often shoot something for a challenge but will see faults that I would like to fix. But with just a week I often didn't have time to try again. (Sometimes I'll enter the dud, sometimes not. But I think my ability to improve is greater the more chances I have to retry and two weeks to enter will increase that chance. So I agree to some extent our median score might increase a bit with longer entry periods.)

Two weeks is also good for me. I just wanted to clarify what Tate had said because I've had several people point out to me the ones who have been on here the longest are spoiled to seeing great photography. Yes, sometimes I'm quite rushed with only one week to deliver. My last challenge was a prime example.

I can say that I am planning shots for the next challenges - without the two weeks I couldn't even try, so I'm very very happy :)

I have learned a lot and owe alot to my personal photog friends and this DPC site.. the two week period will def. help that and execute the images more instead of nilly willy fast shooting just to enter just anything just because it is there.
Planning the shots was a huge issue for me having the cut off date be only a week then having to worry about getting everything else done outside of the online life.

When I joined DPC, I had no clue what my settings were, what they meant, nor did I even know the basic photog terminology let alone how to edit.. Lightroom what?? I am excited for the 2 weeks because I can really slow down and learn and try things without feeling the "rush" of just submitting just anything.

So the next challenge due is this Sunday and the one after that is the following Sunday. That's a whole week off! Perhaps consider a speed challenge during that week (a two day submission period maybe) for those who don't like to be too idle during their vacations. After that, it'll just be back to normal except we will have had two weeks to think about/prepare each entry.

I think this is a great idea to trial. Hopefully we will get more entries ... including more from me ;)

I fully support this idea! I have been so slammed by work this year and have missed multiple challenges that I really wanted to enter but couldn't find the time to edit and submit my photo. An extra week will make a huge difference for me personally! Thanks for giving this a try!

Tanguera, I'll see if I can find. It was one of Yanik's Tutorials on YouTube

Excellent idea site council. Life is pretty full on for me at the moment & it is great to get an extra window of opportunity to participate in the challenges

Now we have so many challenges we can choose from in the home page. This is going to be really inspiring! Thanks a lot :)

This heavy load is temporary, as the new schedule works itself out. There will be the same amount of challenges we've always had :)

3 each week, ok. But the submissions will stay on the home page for 2 weeks, so we'll have 6 in any case, am I wrong?

ETA: I'm sure about that: submission lasts 14 days, but we have still challenges on Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday, so we'll be able to see 6 in the home page :)

Yes, at any given time you will have the choice of six different (non-Free Study) themes to pick from. I had an hour this morning, and, before going out, I looked over the list. At first I was a bit overwhelmed -- where to start? However, that passes quickly, and I decided more options was good. The two week submission period is definitely growing on me.

Most people go on vacations once or twice a year. Taking and seeing photographs from the same areas over and over is actually rather boring especially if they are taken by the same person. As I said before and I will say again I see no problem displaying a picture/photograph that was taken a year maybe two years ago as long as the person submitting it was the actual photographer. If your intent is to increase participation than shoe boxing should be considered. I have not entered many contests for several months because I just don't have the time to go to new areas as some of you do. I really don't enjoy taking photographs of the same things/locations over and over again. I will continue to enter contests off and on until my membership expires in December and then I probably will not renew it unless things have changed.

While we're not planning to change the fundamental structure of the site, we have had some recent challenges open to the use of archival images, and will probably continue to have more than in the past.

gipper11 if you want to do those sort of challenges try Gurushots and Photocrowd. They both have lots and lots of challenges and none of them are date specific. Also there is huge participation. If DPC became like those two sites it would be a real pity and it would be really silly to change the DPC Formula, for, despite the lower participation these days the weekly challenges are what makes DPC stand out from all the other challenge sites available.

I'm really loving the two week submission period. I'm really busy with stuff at the moment and it has meant I was actually able to shoot for a couple of challenges that otherwise I would have missed.

Yaaaay!!!

As the General said, while we are tinkering with the formula just a bit, we are very mindful of what makes DPC different from all the other challenge sites currently enjoying great success with legacy images. We walk a very difficult line between wanting to grow our membership, and staying true to our DNA.
