Are you honestly, with a straight face, trying to claim that living where you do is a real disadvantage? I'm sorry Richard, but that's laughable. Especially considering Denver is closer to you than majestic nature is to most.

I mean, think about someone who lives in say, west Texas, or maybe southern Illinois, or perhaps anywhere in Kansas .. Those are challenging locations.

Heck, I live in NJ but in a part where I'm 60 minutes from the nearest truly "urban" anything, and while the vistas are lovely they're nothing compared to Estes Park. And with that said, I just went to the Challenge History and found nothing on the first four pages that I would call "urban oriented", except possibly the Cityscape/Townscape. I've spent enough time out your way to know that you've got nothing to complain about, unless you need to do a beach weather scene and you've already got snow on the ground. ;)

As someone with 3 young kids, ADD, a full time job, demanding (awesome ;) spouse, new home and more yard (and yard work), I welcome the change.

With this change, should we not expect to see better images ... and more submissions?

My main goal as SC is to a part of the initiative to improve this site. Believe me, this is one of many ideas that we are hoping improve the quantity and quality of images we see here.

Two of the current challenges up for submission are: Abstract Street Photography and Urban Landscapes. I'm not complaining about those. I'll put in the time and effort to participate because it's a DPC challenge. I'm over 100 miles from Denver and working 7 days a week at my gallery. For me to travel to locations that offer possible urban subjects will cut into my other activities, but two weeks will not be of help. That's my point!

So maybe you'll have the extra time to enter more now!

Great idea to try and boost participation. I may even pick up the camera and enter :) it's been a while

I like the idea! Why not allow 2 weeks for voting and commenting too? (Just curious)

I'm really pleased to see this! With a full time time job, with early starts and late finishes I usually only get a chance to shoot at weekends; and then only if I'm not travelling 500 miles to see my partner. Recently has been even harder due to extra 'stuff' happening - but with a two week window I may have a chance..............

And maybe after two months we'll all vote back to weekly challenges but definitely worth testing the idea!

:-)

For the record, here's the challenge description on "Urban Landscapes": Of, relating to, or located in a city or town. You live in a lovely town, and it's FULL of activity right now. Show it to us! I'm in the same boat here; I live in a small town in a rural area on an isolated sandbar in the Atlantic Ocean. It's a couple hours from here to Providence or Boston, the big cities of the neighborhood. Even Provincetown, which is the closest thing we have to Estes Park, is about an hour's drive down-Cape in tourist season. So I'll have to do some thinking too. I'm glad I have 2 weeks to work on it :-)

Wherever you live, there's someone thinking about investing a lot of time & money to get there to take pictures because they think their own hometown isn't photogenic enough, & yours is. It's difficult to properly appreciate your own habitat. It's always a temptation to travel. Travel is fun.

I brought up this possibility with SC.
It seems to make sense to me personally.

One problem with that is it would double the number of challenge result displays on the Home Page and push the forums out of sight below. Another issue is that currently voting is pretty stagnant and it would be disheartening to wait two weeks for results on something where the tally's been stalled for some time.

I agree, voting in 2 weeks is really too much IMO.

As it stands now, commenting can continue forever if you want.

Dunno about everyone else, but I'd say that your streets are street enough, maybe even a bit different in a good way, if Estes park is anything like Durango or other small Colorado towns I'm familiar with.

And urban landscape? If you could get another twilight shot overlooking your town, I suspect it would score well. *Shrug*. I'm just jealous and miss the mountains and cool air. (Mind you, my damn lens fogs up for 15 minutes anytime I leave the house or car)

This is great!!! I am excited about the extension!! Thank you SC for all the hard work you put into making things roll better

I also think that extending the challenge tme is great, this will allow me more time to think about a theme and time for exucution
08/16/2016 12:15:04 PM · #44
Well, it certainly lowers the "Challenge" bar for the site.
08/16/2016 12:17:41 PM · #45
In the past few months the challenges I REALLYREALLYREALLY wanted to enter but didn't are definitely more than the ones I actually did enter, and of those I entered there are a few whose entry "sould have been significantly better", if I had a little more time to shoot.

So yup, working guys thank the council for this decision!

I think the additional time will be especially helpful to me as the days get shorter. In a few months it will be dark as I head into work and getting dark again before I head home. If I want natural light I'll have two weekends to be able to shoot each challenge.

I like the idea. It's good to experiment and not always do things the same way. As a former school administrator one of the best things someone told me was that the expression "We have always done it that way" is a killer

If we are going to be seeing 8+ challenges in the submission section, can we please get a way to ignore challenges just like we can with threads? It's already overwhelming and I don't look forward to the extra burden of finding the challenges I care to enter.

Note that if implemented, the ignore should not be respected for challenges in voting, just in the submission phase.

As an experiment, why not have the extended submission as a trial for members, and nothing changes for non member challenges. If membership increases as a result, then positive. If not, then oh well. Back to the drawing board.
