Just a thought ...

Since we are on the subject of comments, does anyone know what "too bad so sad for the people in this .. " means?

I think it obviously means "that the people sad in this are to bad" however I could be wrong. :)

Kidding aside, it is very possible that English it not everyones first or even second language. Whatever it means it is better than my French, German, Spanish, ect. ect.... I think.

LOL! I got a private message from the person that wrote that and English is not his second language. It's been rewritten and now I understand it. After scratching my head for a while this morning, I got a good laugh from it. It just goes to show you that we don't always convey our meaning well with the written word.

do the collective "we" have an opinion on allowing only signed comments? yes, comments become signed when the challenge ends, but then another is taken up and the previous week's results quickly fade away -- but if a name were attached to the flaming for a whole "active" week, perhaps this would cut down on some of the negativity without cutting out the constructive criticism

(if this has been played out already in another thread, I apologize)

I agree with allowing this.

Why even keep it anonymous during the week..your comment will be made un-anonymous at the end of voting.

And your comments are not made public to the other voters till the end of the voting anyway so there will be no undue infuence to other voters.

And if a flame post comes from a casual web surfer then maybe some folks here won't get so upset and just shrug it off.

Make the comments auto signed is fine by me.

Actually, it's a scientifically proven fact that there's no gravity. The world sucks and holds everybody on.

I think they are currently unsigned because people would petition / hound / whine at / and general try to influence the vote of anyone that gave a low score... This would lead to folks not leaving comments on anything they saw a problem with. I remeber some discussion a ways back about bringing them back, and I hope it happens...

The Stalin brothers????!!!!

By Sunday night all anonymity of the comments are gone. It's better having to wait a few days to find out who wrote a bizarre comment than risking the vote influencing, as described by myqyl.

I'm sorry I have to agree with deadeye....so far all I've seen are rude, snotty comments. The old adage(sp?), if you don't have something, nice, or constructive to say.....then don't say anything. If you don't like a picture, fine, either say I don't like it and give it a 1, or don't say anything and give it a 1. But to say something like....thanks for wasting my time, or trying to be cute by saying the subject of your photo has some sort of diseases....is totally uncalled for. I've submitted 3 seperate challenges, the first the comments were for the most part constructive and I appreciated them. The second, most were negative, without suggestions on how to make it a better shot, this last one, so far I've gotten 10 comments, all but one were uncalled for. Unless something is done to make it unacceptible for this kind of immature behavior, I will stop wasting my time, and stop submitting to the challenges. I was in great hopes of being able to learn something at this site, but what I was hoping to learn was how to make my pictures better, not how to insult people and hurt their feelings. Bravo deadeye for standing up to be heard. I will follow your lead and say adios as well.

That is uncalled for. I guess what I meant by "possibly offensive" are comments like, "I think this is really uninspired. You had a lot to work with, but instead you just took a simple shot. Definite potential wasted."

I don't know, but do you guys think that's "rude?"

I like receiving comments like this.
I actually like these sorts of comments more than "thats a great photo" because at least then I know I can improve it.

Dear TomNTexas: I hope you stick around a while more and try and make the site better ("lead by example"). I just went and looked at your entry for "Corporate..." and, although most comments were negative, I saw 10 of 19 making specific criticisms and/or suggestions of how to improve your chosen subject.

Lately I've been trying to respond to all the comments made on my previous photo. I'll speak directly to the comment/criticism if it makes sense to do so. If the comment seems inane or pointless, I just say "thank you for commenting on my photo..." Even if they can't think of anything constructive to say, the person at least took the time to write something, and if their goal was to be deliberately upsetting it will deny them that "pleasure."
