I have a stupid question (I know "There's no such thing as a stupid question" - but there are stupid people who ask questions, hee, hee). What do you use to rename all you photos when you get back from a shoot. I have a bazillion jpg's that I still have to name. I appreciate any help. Ray

I never rename mine unless I edit it either for posting or printing, in which case I add a name in front of the number (e.g., DSC8888.jpg becomes cominco_DSC8888.jpg. That way I always can track the original.

Ursula

PS - like Mavrik above I put my numbered files in folders with descriptive names, inside folders for each month. You do tend to get overrun with pictures with these digital cameras.

I've tried every method known to man. I settled for folders by date and then original file names in there.

Folder:
My pictures

Sub folders:
DPC
OPP (other people's pictures)
Family
Trips
Weddings
Image Captures (all original files)

Sub sub folders:
Family -- My side
Family -- fiancee's side
Family -- Our family
Trips -- 2004 - 8 - 12 Niagara Falls
Trips -- 2004 - 9 - 15 Letchworth State Park

I save all image captures into one folder on the date created:
Image captures -- 9/4/2004
Image captures -- 9/11/2004

Etc. This way I can generally find anything I need.

Thanks, Matt and Ursula. I guess I need to get some kind of system started before I get overrun with unkown photos! I appreciate your help.

If you just want to change the file name to something that makes more sense than the number system your camera puts out you could use Irfanview its a free program and it dose batch conversions. You can batch convert file types, jpeg quality, or the file names. Not sure if that is what your looking for but I hope it helps some. I forget the web site for Irfanview but if you do a web search im sure it will come up.

I normally name mine with the date, their type, and then a descriptive title. Today I had 2004-10-10-original-fog01 that also became 2004-10-10-processed-fog01 and 2004-10-10-web-fog01. As for folders, I've tried the date thing and I still couldnt find stuff so I just broke them down into generic themes such as animals, flowers, events, clients etc. There are lots of ways to do it, it's just a matter of finding one that works for you.

All my originals are numbered as are all the tiffs for working on. The raws are burned to cd in numeric order.
Tiffs retain the number info with nothing added. They are placed first in a work folder. After editing they are placed in another folder for completed editing. From there, I make jpegs, name them and place them in folders according to the pictures purpose, for example dpc, personal, portraits. There are usually sub folders within the jpeg folders.
I copy tiffs if they have a lot of editing or they are important. I never burn jpegs because they are just a fragile copy of the tiff.

I archive mine by date and time like this:
yyyy/mm/dd/HH-MM-SS-CCCCC-CCC.jpg
the CCCCC-CCC on the end of the file name is a checksum, that way if there are two picture taken the same second, they will have unique file names. So a file name with this system will look like 2004/10/03/21-57-58-27487-1296.jpg. The main thing about this convention is that the file names can be genereated automatically. I use database with a browser based front end to keep track to titles and descriptions of the pictures. The date organiztion also helps when backing up to cd, because it makes it easy to pull off just the new files since the last backup

A little like ursula and mavrik, numbered images in the general library (iPhoto), copies into descriptive folders (called 'albums' in iPhoto). I have about fifty of such albums: the whole shabang (library, sorted albums) burnt on DVD for backup. Backups are sorted by date: dd/mm/yr.

I keep only renamed and resampled images in a separate folder inside my document folder and back this one up quarterly.
