Noah Grey
a lot of photographs to look and learn.

Thanks for this link. I love his site, and his work. He uses "soft focus" frequently, something I love, but I fear some of his wonderful work wouldn't fare well on dpc; soft focus here is almost certainly the "kiss of death"!

I am newbie here... could you explain me what 'soft focus' is? thanks..

To me, soft focus shots are those with an intentional blur, or a diffuse, dreamlike quality.
See these photos of Noah Grey's as an example. There have been some nice soft focus shots here at dpc that I really like a lot, but on the whole, voters at dpc seem to prefer crisp, sharply focused shots.

thanks..that's clear enough for me now...
I think I like that soft focus touch as well..

Why don't we suggest 'soft focus' as the next challenge... it probably will change some user's preference of crips or sharp shot..
(I guess I have to put it in 'Challenge suggestion' forum).

Any way, any idea how to shot a 'soft focus'?
should we lower the shutter speed? use small F? or the lighting is the main key?

Thanks..

I'm actually getting a bit tired (and this is no comment on the photography here, which is great) of sites and publications which use mostly lower case letters to give it a futuristic feel, as if it suddenly makes the site poetic and artsy. This site only does it in a few places, but it made me think of this.

martin
and all these eecumming-mails...

Just found out that Noah is closing his site on the 1st of Jan, 2009. What a loss!

I missed this thread the first time around (five years ago!). I'm glad to have the opportunity to check out his portfolio. He's going out of business after so many years; I wonder what's behind his decision.

He's probably going through what so many photographers are. The market is crushed at the moment as most are in this economy. Throw on top of that every person with a digital camera shooting mediocre shots and selling them for $5 and totally devaluing print sales.

Galleries are going out of business left and right and most of the ones left are becoming "pay to show" galleries so you have to pay to have your work hung. The problem with that is that most galleries that aren't PTS know the ones that are and if you pay to be in one you stand no chance of getting in more "prestigious" (AKA - ones that can actually make you money) galleries.

The business is screwed and it's a shame. A lot of top name photographers are just fed up with it. He won't be the last to go bye bye...

Well, it looks like Noah has made good on his promise to pull the pin on his online presence come Jan 1st 2009. All there is now is a photo of a disable person... symbolic of the site being disable perhaps? His presence will be missed... I hope he'll return.

Well, I'm glad he killed his site before I got chance to see it. I won't have to feel sad seeing it go.

The "disabled" person was his partner, the love of his life, who died unexpectedly. I found this thread because I'm trying to find Noah. Noah fought many darknesses, and Barry's loss crushed him. I'm hoping to god he's ok.
