"Open the image you want to edit and make sure the layers palette is visible.
Duplicate the background layer
From the edit menu, choose transform and select flip horizontal
Change the blending mode of the layer to difference.
From the layers menu, choose flatten

Just what I had copied to notes some time ago.

In addition to the basic instructions posted ...

1) experiment with blending modes other than "Difference", especially in the earlier transformations. I often use two or three different blending modes altogether.

2) you can adjust colors/contrast (Curves or Levels) in between steps.

3) If you are going to make a square image, I suggest cropping (or re-sizing disproportionally) before applying any transformations.

If you are going to use a standard 4:3 frame you'll need to re-size the rotated layer by 133.33% for the short side and 75% for the long side.

I suppose I have to be able to say how I got to my final result . . .

Just save your working file.

and we've been given some additional leeway this challenge, too...

"But for this challenge, you may layer, flip, rotate, blend, and warp your source photo to create your entry."

i am working under the assumption that "warp" allows for a wide range of "distortions" in the spirit of the this challenge

can SC confirm??

I believe that as long as you stick to one original you can distort the image however you want.

Absolutely. "warping" would be a catchall to include scaling, perspective, etc. I am using some of that myself.

OK, it's been awhile since I did this, and I used to have an action.... how the heck did I create actions?? Gotta go see if I can figure that out...

Is there an app for this actually? Or does it have to be photoshop?

Here ya go Melethia!

Remember, way back when, you encouraged me to learn how to do actions. What a handy technique to have! (except when you accidentally delete one which I just did)

Anything which supports layers and various blending modes should work.

I tend to use "Difference" as little as possible. I like to keep things simple and find that it creates too much detail.

Anyone able to recommend an app for an iPhone?

There's a photoshop app for your iPhone but it's not free.

check out iColorama... much more than just flip/bend, but good options under the Form menu

Because for Expert we'd have had to LIMIT the legal things you could do, and people have a lot more trouble with that. It's easier to ADD options with a special rule than it is to remove them.

Since we are allowed to use layers, can I safely assume that we are "allowed" to use masking?
