B4 i start, i hope i am not duplicating another thread, i did do a search, that out of the way, have They that run the site ever thought about publishing a book with photographs from challenge winners from lets say a period of a year, this site produces some truly great photo's that i am sure would not look out of place on a bookshelf.. I used to visit a site called cgtalk for digital arts they collaborated (with ballistic publ.) to produce books(expose 1&2) showcasing some of their best member images. I am sure a lot of the members would buy it & so would a lot of other people. And it's more exposure for the winners, giving them a chance to maybe earn a buck or 2 (for that D2x or 1ds II)!

I suggested that about 8 months ago to D&L. People would have to agree to buying a book first before we went to press as otherwise the funder would be out of pocket.

I suggested it could be done as a non profit making venture - perhaps a small profit for the designer and organizer, but the point would be minimal and the aim would be for us all to have a book of nice photography.

I am sure 95% of the photographers included would by it - I know i would.

Anyway, I never heard back so i presumed it wasn't something they wanted to go down.

i agree it should not be for a profit, i would be nice to see all the pictures, the way they were meant to be seen, not on a screen but on paper and in their original size...

Why "not for profit"? Nearly every other "coffee table" type book of photos is "for profit", and since D&L have given their time, effort, and, I would imagine, plenty of their own money to give all of these fine photographers a place to showcase their work, as well as dpcprints to sell their work, I cannot see why anyone would be against a "for profit" book.

I am not a "ribbon winner", but if I were, I would gladly give permission to print my photo(s) for such a book.

I also think that calendars are a wonderful idea. This is something that I would look forward to every year, and it would make a great gift for plenty of people. Have a "run-off" vote for all of the members first place winners for a previous 12 month period, and pick the top 12/13 for the calendar. (Why MEMBERS? Because I think this should be one of the privileges reserved for paying members.)

If it was for profilt - and more importantly for D&L's profit they would have to charge a log more for the book, and also organise all the design, printing and distribution of said book.

I am sure they are busy enough making this site work.

Ahh..I understand what you are saying.

I do think, though, that a book, or calendars, would be a great thing, and should not only be offered to the photographers of dpc, but should also be sold to the general public via dpcprints where the possibility of long-term residual income is a pretty good bet. In less than 2 years, dpcprints is in the top 500,000 on the web, and is moving up at a good pace, and I see books and calendars as an "added value" thing for customers and visitors to the site.

Perhaps D&L could hire/delegate/coerce someone for such a project!

Just some thoughts on sustaining dpc/dpcprints for the long haul.

what does top 500,000 mean? What is their monthly sales figures?

Top 500,000 in traffic ranking on the internet, which puts them in approximately the top 3% of all internet sites. More traffic will eventually translate to more $$$.

I am certainly not privy to dpcprints sales figures, but whatever those figures are, they can only go up as the traffic on the site continues to increase.

In truth the pictures actual original intent, at least as submitted to dpc, was to be voted upon by members in the size of 640x480 and viewed on a monitor. Don't get that wrong. If memory serves - Inga_fang deserves credit for the original idea of presenting the idea of a book in the forums.

Scab-Lab is a part of Toycamera.com. The users published a book; I bought a copy. Very cool stuff.

Great. A calendar full of bug macros.

Why do we have to limit it to ribbon winners? I think there are a large number of excellent photos that are totally overlooked on this site.

I would certainly buy that book..and buy a few for gifts!
10/07/2004 10:13:41 AM · #16
@jonpink: I can't tell you how I find that out; I'd have to kill you.
(I do a lot of research on website rankings and use the Alexa toolbar, among other things, to find out rankings/traffic/links, etc.)

@muckpond: LOL @ the bug macros - I can see that happening! I would have to agree about there being a LOT of overlooked, incredible photos on this site. Maybe a ribbon winner calendar, a tree calendar, a landscape calendar, a nude calendar, a portrait calendar....sheesh, ya got me now - the possibilities are endless, now that you got me thinking about it.

I need to do some HIGH quality short run calenders.....Anyone have any advice? Just for gifts, but I want them to look professional.
10/07/2004 11:21:54 AM · #18
What about having a calendar option as part of the print options on the print site. The buyer could pick out whichever 12 pictures they want from all the prints available. No special work would be involved, people would be able to bulk order any number of them for special fundraisers. Well, the photographers would have to give their permission for it to be resold as a calendar, I guess. But that way the site and the individual photographers would get a cut of each one printed.

At last count there were 27,409 registered and paid members of DPC. Therre's nothing stopping any one of them from taking the entrepreneurial lunge to produce such a book. Doesn't have to be D&L.
10/07/2004 12:26:08 PM · #20
Isn't everyones copyright stopping just anyone from doing this. Someone would need to get the permission from each photographer before starting such a project wouldn't they?

I didn't read the whole thread so I'm sorry if this has already been brought up.

As I've been reading this thread, I thought about doing it as a collective fund raiser for, let's stay, Amnesty International.

I'm brainstorming out loud here but ya know, kind of like getting pledges from people for a walk-a-thon but instead you get poeple to buy a BEAUTIFUL photograpy book and, say, x% of the profits goes to the charity. If each DPC photog get 3 people to buy a book and the charity gets, let's say, $10 per book sold, we're talking major fund raising here. :-)

DPC and its photogs raising $$ for Amnesty. It's good press, good exposure, and for a great cause. The book could also be sold through Amnesty Intl and their sponsors.

Can you see where I'm getting at??? Something BIG! I'm a dreamer but also a little guy with lots of vision. :-) I would be willing to lend my PR and management skills to this project weather it be done independantly though the photogs here or via DPC and D&L.

Delusions of gradure? Maybe.... but that's just me. :-) I think the unthinkable then try to do it.

What say you?... and what say D&L?

Excellent idea...
why not have a challenge especially for a chosen charity, then publish the results of that challenge in a fundraising book. The challenge could happen over a couple of months to really get the standard up.

I think an entire challenge dedicated to a book project would be an excellent idea. This would make the book more appealing as a purchase for everyone who participated in the challenge. It would be a great month long (or longer) free study. The book could show the photos in finishing order and include photographer bio information and info on the photo with each image.

I would also volunteer time and effort to do the layout work for the book....

...and why not broaden your market too? Perhaps include some accompanying poems (such as haiku) to go with the photo's. Without wishing to appear as if I'm shamelessly plugging one of my own interests (poetry writing),because I'm not, I note that there are members on this site with the capability to have an input in that direction - and like I said, it might make the publication appealing to a wider audience aswell?

That is a fantastic idea BobsterLobster!
