First check out the Overlay Side challenge threads. Do you want to enjoy developing your skill with this fascinating & fun PP? Show off the good ones? Get some ideas for the not-so-good ones?

Then, sign-up here. Make a folder in your portfolio for the finished comps, so we can browse easily. Put the texture files you don't mind sharing in your Workshop folder, where they are accessible. Get (& give) comments.

No rules, no requirements, but if you can remember your steps, put what you can remember in your Notes. List any good royalty-free sources for texture files you find in your Notes, too.

I can never keep up with these things, but I can share what I did for my entry, which was totally new to me.

Source images:

with in Darken mode, at 50% opacity. I used a flash to (mostly) blow out the wall to start, then used Curves Adjustment layers through masks to adjust the wall and clock parts separately. With the texture layer in Darken mode, it doesn't show up on the dark wood, and making the clock-face and pendulum weight look transparent.

Texture file as used is is a moderate closeup of the sidewalk outside my house with a Curve applied to make the maximum density 50%.

my entry in the texture overlay challenge (following Paul's lead)

I used Silver Efex Pro2 to turn this to BW
.

used the mold growing on the white mailbox in the picture, for texture, blended on Overlay.

I decided to play it safe. Very safe.

Can I cheat and use Topaz Texture Effects? I just got it, and I need an excuse to put it through its paces. Not trying to convince anyone else to buy it, mind you, but between the built-in stuff, tweaks, and the ability to upload more textures it looks like a lot of fun to play with.

Sample (I created this overlay by tweaking an existing preset, changing the texture, and adding a light leak, FWIW):

Welcome Jake, Rachel, Patsy, & Mary!

The purpose is to find your sweet spot with texture overlays, multiple exposures, etc. so of course you will use your favorite software.

Hopefully we'll learn from one another & have lots of fun.

Thank goodness for coincidence ... today's email has a link to this article on How To Ad Texture Effects To Photos (uses Topaz software) ...

You link to the article works. But I can't get Topaz Labs at all, on my pc or my iPhone.

Well, I'm more interested in combining photos anyway ... to answer your question I think the only thing I might do differently with my entry might be to use a finer-grained (less zoomed-in) concrete photo, to make the texture more sandpaper-like, to go with the theme "Life Can Be Rough" ...

I used to have a good time with overlays/textures. Can I play too?

I'll play around with it. I'm also a new adopter of Topaz Texture Effects and it's amazing: it organizes everything you'd want to try with textures into a single interface, and it encourages you to create your own textures and load them up, so it's an integrated solution, so to speak. Not one of those apps that "forces" you into a certain way of working and a standardized "look"...

I really wanted Topaz texture effects so I downloaded the trial bundle, thinking I could fill the gaps in my collection. Unfortunately texture effects and impressionism are 64 bit and my set up isn't. Worse than that disappointment though, now the new trial bundle has replaced the bundle I had. The key they gave me doesn't fit, I'm worse off than before. Some things work, some don't. Topaz detail 3 had disappeared from my original bundle and doesn't work on this one. I hope that when the trial is over I can get my old bundle working properly.

Marion, I'm sorry to hear of your disappointing experience with Topaz texture effects. I hope you get your old bundle working again--you might 'have to' call tech support. :[

I too decided to try it. But I could not get topazlabs.com to load. Not on my pc. Not on my iPhone.

grr

Sorry; should have mentioned my complications. I was using PSE 12 and it's 32-bit, so I needed to upgrade to PSE 14 for Texture Effects. That was OK, since it has a few new features I was interested in, but then I discovered Google's Nik Collection only work up to PSE 13, so I have to flip back to PSE 12 for some of my standard editing steps. Currently hoping for a Nik upgrade so I can go back to using one version of PSE!

Mostly going back and playing with existing images to see how different I can make them from my usual processing. Will take some new pictures when I get some more time! Also will comment; I promise :-)
