hmmm, I was just thinking and I don't know if this is just my thoughts, but probly since the anouncement of this, I think some of the work of everyone on here is going to explode and some are just going to be awesome, not that the quality isn't great right now. The stuff on this site has grown so much since I've been on in August. This is a big step in the right direction for this site.

To sell a print to the public, you'll be approved for specific print sizes. You will then set your selling price for that print.

Do we need to make sure that the hi-res photos are uploaded to match the low-res versions or does that occur only when someone orders a print? That could get quite involved.

This was one of our early dilemmas, but here's how it's solved. You're browing DPC and you see, for example, a challenge image that you like and is available for a print. You follow the link to order a print, and you are shown a seperate print preview. That print preview, in the example of a challenge image, could have a border and text and even spot editing at the artists' discretion. So, a portfolio item has a print associated with it, though it may not be the exact same image. That make sense? No matter what, the print preview you're shown is always exactly the print you will receive.

Are tiffs even necessary as they can obviously get quite large?

TIFs are definitely not necessary. In fact, I printed my Stop Reflections image (JPG) at what amounted to about 70dpi, and I thought it came out beautifully.

I think we're going to keep that secret until the launch of the service, but I promise it'll be competitive and very fair.

My biggest request : can we get ICC printer profiles please ? For both matte and glossy finishes - that would be wonderful!

I had a set of pictures done today at a local camera store - the first place I've found and the colour match is perfect, totally perfect. This is so much better than the variable guesstimates I've had with lots of online places - EZPrints is good but even their test prints make things difficult to get an accurate match. Please please please, ICC profiles!

Drew, how about adding the ability to add template borders to our photos and also the ability to put a name and copyright stamp from a template on the site on the border of choice.

That sounds like a good idea.

I've thought so many times, 'Woo, I'd like that as a print'! :-)

Just wondering though, will you be able to ship prints abroad?

I have to admit, having a 'Buy Print Now' link below pics when I'm voting would be painfully tempting..

One thought - perhaps there could be an option to 'hold' prints until the user decides to have them shipped? This would be great if you wanted to save on shipping and receive half a dozen at once.

How about a 'wishlist' option for prints - sort of like your favorites. This is like Paul's 'hold' option, but with the added feature that anyone could buy them and ship them to you ?

I think that's the route we're planning on taking :)

I just copied this from one of the other threads:

If this is database driven, can we have the ability to display the same photo in two (or more) portfolios, as is done with the galleries? This would involve creating a "Copy To" button in addition to the "Move To" button, but it is a feature available at pBase, Ofoto, and I'd guess many other gallery sites.
Also, how about having one site-wide portfolio which new visitors hit by default. Every member could contribute one photo, and they could be displayed in rotation or randomly.

It feels good to be a member here!

Price on feeling good? Priceless!

YAHOO for Drew and Langdon! <insert thumbs up icon here>

What about members who are outside of the USA?

How does that work - shipping, customs, duties, taxes, paperwork, currency exchange, etc.?

Will we be using that PayPal deal again? It was too annoying and too expensive for folks outside of the USA. As well, they have me on a mailing list and send me emails weekly - just what I need, more junk emails, what a joy.

We haven't gotten to coding shipping yet, but this is from our printer's site:

International shipping times and rates will vary upon location and products ordered. Rates will be calculated and displayed during your ordering process. International customers are responsible for all Duties and V.A.T. that may be added to the cost of your order upon receipt.

The new print buying and selling with not be using PayPal. As far as your junk e-mails, first I apologize for the inconvenience. Log into your PayPal account. Under 'My Account', click the 'Profile' tab. Then click 'Notifications'. You can adjust what e-mails you receive.

Copy's going to be pretty tough with the architecture we're using right now, but we'll keep it in mind.

Your welcome...part of my lifelong experience with computers and systems is asking them to do things the designers hadn't considered, and then figuring out a way to make them do it anyway. Wish I had more knowledge of the systems you're using now...
I have a basic understanding of databases, but about 2 hours of practical experience with them, so don't let me disrupt your plans at this point.
In graphic arts, we consider the customer's mantra to be "Can't you just...?" so feel free to say when something's too much trouble!
