Hey all,

We've decided we want to let you all know what's going on at DPChallenge, as it's pretty exciting stuff! In 2-3 weeks, you'll be able to upload your work to your own personal portfolio. From that portfolio, you'll be able to buy prints of your own photographs and sell your prints through the site!

We've just about finished coding the personal portfolios. Here's a quick preview...

All of your challenge images automatically go into your portfolio. Once there, you can move them to whatever collection (explained next) you like. You can create unlimited, nested collections for your photos (same concept as a gallery if you're more familiar with that term). There are a bunch of tools to move, rename, remove, and otherwise alter your collections and photographs.

You'll be able to upload a printable version of any portfolio item (of course, including challenge entries). Once uploaded, you'll be able to buy prints and gift items of your own prints immediately! We intend for our service to be complete and competitive, hopefully so much so that you can use us as your personal, online photo-finisher.

Of course, one of the most exciting new features will be the ability to sell your prints online! I think we're going to save our specific business model on this one until we launch the new features, but I will say that our rates will be very competitive. You'll be able to mark up the base price specific-sized prints, and you'll receive a cut of that markup!

These new features will be available for members-only, at least to start. Our personal portfolio size is currently limited to 10mb. We'll be reevaluating that once the site gets off its feet. Print-size files, thumbnails, and any other preview resizings we do will not count toward your limit. Just your chosen-size, portfolio-display photograph.

What we'd like you to do is answer this question: What feature would you desire most in this service (collectively portfolios and print selling/buying)?

We're trying very hard to get this up in the next 2 to 3 weeks, and we hope you all are as excited about it as we are. Thanks in advance for your feedback!!

This sounds awesome. A great new fun feature for the site you guys. This site continues to get better all the time. I am so glad I ran into this site months ago. Are the Print-size files the bigger ones from the camera? and they won't count for the 10mb or will just the little sized down prints count? I'm just not understanding that part. Other than that everything sounds awesome and I can't wait.

Before I answer yours, I have a question... Will our challenge photos count against our 10 meg and if so can we remove them from our portfolio? Honestly, I can only think of a couple of my challenge shots I would want to print, and half of those, I would want to re-edit with a little spot editing. At 150k each, someone with 35 entries has already used 5 meg.

My answer to your question : I would like very much to be able to have orders shipped to relatives addresses. The ability to make holiday cards (Christmas, Valentines Day, Groundhog Day, etc.) and send them to multiple addresses would also be a BIG plus for me. Calenders would be great too. The option to buy the print framed without an astronomical mark up would certainly be a plus as well. I usually purchase "Brag Books" (20 or so images bound for easy traveling) once a year from Shutterfly. Needless to say I would move that business here if it was offered.

Lastly, I have to give you a little reality check here. 10 meg is not going to work for long. On jpg, my images are 2.5 meg coming out of the camera. Tiff is 16 meg. For prints I would want every pixel I could get.

Absolutely.

Working on it.

Also working on it!

The only image that counts against your limit is your displayed portfolio image. Let me try to explain better. Let's say you want to upload an image that's 900x700, 200k. For that image, we'd generate a medium-size image for browsing users, as well as a thumbnail. Then you upload a printable version of that file as a 7mb TIFF. We generate a preview-size of the print, as well as a thumbnail of the print. That's a bunch of files, but the only thing that counts against your limit is the 200k file. Hopefully, that answers your question as well, Jubei.

I agree that it would be sad to have the challenge photos taking up a lot of the available 10MB. They're really no use at all for prints.

This is a great idea though, and I've been looking forward to it for ages! There are some great, bizarre photos on this site that never came close to winning any challenges, but that I would love to decorate my walls with. I will beg the photographers in question to offer prints for me to buy :).

Edited to say: I just saw your reply to that question, Drew. That's cool :).

Ahhh! Not sure I completely understand yet, but that makes much more sense... This is a great feature and I'll be on the edge of my seat till it's done :)

Hey Karen!?! Konador made you your own icon? That's great!

My question is what if we have photos we have used for competition but want to retain our own copyright on them, will we be able to remove them from the portfolios?
02/08/2003 01:22:39 PM · #10
This is great. I've used my yahoo photo's page to do some printing, but I'd prefer to have a one stop shop here! Plus there are several DPC photo's I'd like to have printouts of!

Thanks!

My guess is that it would be to not upload a printable version of it. I don't think you can get a good print out of a 150k photo, unless maybe it's a 1 inch by 1 inch.

Your challenge images will be automatically in there, as they are in your profile on the site right now. If you wish to, you can upload a high quality version suitable for printing, but this is completly optional.
02/08/2003 01:39:45 PM · #13
I have a similar question as OneSweetSin. Are we the copyright owners of our photos? Or by uploading them to DPC we lose ownership?

02/08/2003 01:42:43 PM · #14
As it says at the bottom of each page on the site:

All digital photo copyrights belong to the photographers and may not be used without permission.

Duh! I guess I forgot about that.

BTW, with the question I forgot to say that this could be one of the greatest features on this site.

Congratulations guys!

Like Konador said, you absolutely retain the copyright for the photo. Allowing prints is completely optional and requires an extra step or two on your part. If you'd like to 'remove' a challenge image from your portfolio, simply place it in a hidden portfolio collection. The challenge image would then still show up throughout the site where challenge images are displayed, but it would not appear in your browsable portfolio.

Ever since somone pointed me to EZPrints I have been ordering my prints only in Matte finish as I like the Matte finish much better than the glossy. I would very much like to purchase my prints through this site but would only do so if matte finish was available.

Here are just a few questions I have:
- Will Matte and Glossy photo finishes be available?
- What printing process will be used? Kodak or Fuji? I have come to like the Fuji prints much more than the Kodak prints.
- Will shipping rates be reasonable?
- Will the site allow for adding boarders and such for prints being ordered?
- Will this in any way increase membership prices?

I think this is a great idea. This site rocks!!!!!!!!!

Thanks!

Matte prints, ability to prevent cropping to fit print, cheap shipping, and a variety of print sizes are my top priorities.

How about an address book of people we want to send photos (at our cost) to?
Buttons/links to our galleries?

Can you reveal who will be handling printing/shipping? If it's through a retail-type outlet, then the ability to will-call prints at a local store would be a great option.

Great ideas guys!

I am also curious about the size restrictions and ordering process. I would hate for someone to accidentally order a low-res print and be disappointed by the quality. Do we need to make sure that the hi-res photos are uploaded to match the low-res versions or does that occur only when someone orders a print? That could get quite involved. It sounds like you are giving us control over the low-res version in terms of quality and that's good but I am just unsure of how many of the hi-res versions can be stored on here. One hi-res photo suitable for printing can be anywhere from 1 to 2 mbs just for jpgs and considerably bigger for tiffs or for poster sized prints, if offered. Are tiffs even necessary as they can obviously get quite large? Anyway, I'm sure it will get all worked just fine.

If you want them to be for sale, they can be! Nothing will be for sale unless you make it for sale. But prints of challenge entries are a great thing to sell.

To sell your prints to the public, you'll need to be approved for certain print sizes, according the the aspect ratio and resolution of your image. Print quality is of utmost importance to us.

I think a 'request a print' feature would be a good one. If nothing else, by simple e-mail.

You're in luck. EZPrints is our backend printer!

Yes!

Fuji.

Originally posted by wackybill:

Certainly. We haven't gotten to shipping yet in our coding, but you should expect approximately the same rates as you're used to with EZP.

Yes!

No! All members will be able to start uploading portfolio items and prints the day we launch it!

How much of the sale does the photographer get to keep and how much of it is going to commission I guess to DPC?
