time and time again we get expert editing on topics that guarantee digital art or Photoshop creations. see "Aliens" as an example..

i say we stop suggesting editing sets when we suggest challenge topics, just apply the editing sets randomly.

or choose an editing level and apply a topic randomly? and kill the DNMC? a religious sort of war?

Even though I love digital art, I would like to see some Expert challenges that are "regular" topics.

We've still, to my knowledge, never had an Expert Editing Free Study.

i'd be interested to see what would get submitted to an expert free study.

There were two in 2007 (!!) but I guess that's too long ago to count.

I'd personally love to see a challenge where all the tools of photoshop were legal... But you had to use only one capture... That would eliminate some of the digital art and at the same time, allow us the chance to learn and use Photoshop to it's full potential.

Does that include using the same capture in multiple ways in the same entry? For example, flip-'n-blend repeats the capture in multiple orientations and blend modes to create something entirely new. How about using a single flower and the power of Photoshop to create a (very) nuanced "garden"? See, I'm *guessing* that you want to see where people take a single image without all that cloning/repetition, more like enhancing reality than creating a reality, but how do you propose setting up the limitation?

Enhanced is exactly where I'm going with it... To me, there is a huge gap between Advanced editing and Expert editing... I'll be honest, I'm not really sure how to word it (chiefly because there are a lot of things people can do with photoshop that I'm not even aware of) But the fact that we can't add motion blur or colored overlays seriously closes people off to very important techniques in Photoshop... I feel like there has to be some middle ground between the two rule sets...

Sure. And then bear in mind that ANOTHER of those things is to be able to swap, say, the eyes from *this* frame into the frame that has the perfect smile but the model's in mid-blink. That's important too. But now we're using TWO originals, right? Of course, in Advanced we already allow up to 10 originals for exposure or focus stacking... Why not for this? Panoramas? Why not? It goes on and on, and there just HAS to be a line somewhere, sigh...

I'm with you, actually, it's my dream to have the primary ruleset be far less restrictive than it currently is, but dreams are just that... WRITING the rule so we don't get a whole 'nother set of loopholes is a real problem, unfortunately.

Yeah I know, that's why I never bothered to post a new thread on it awhile back... There are a ton of problems that come along with the semantics and language of new rules. I don't have a deep enough understanding of photoshop and the work arounds to offer any viable solutions. I do, however, think that dialogue on the subject is good, and with enough of it, we may be able to hammer out a good portion of potential problems if there is ever a move to add a new rule set. Not sure it will ever happen, but it doesn't hurt to discuss it :)

I think the last thing we need is yet another rule set that tries to create some arbitrary restrictions between Advanced and Expert. Just use Expert. If you only want to use a single frame, than you have that option, but don't try to prevent someone else from changing a background (for instance) because you want to limit the ability to create digital art. Just let people do what they want, and I think you might be surprised that not everyone tries to create some fantasy based imagery. This seems to be a DPC thing due to almost all the Expert topics lending themselves to these types of images. For example, there doesn't seem to be any issue with the weekly competitions at 1X, where the theme is a one or two word subject and there are no editing rules. The entries are all types of editing, some that could be minimal, or at least very close to it, and all the way up to Expert.

I like the rulesets as they are overall ... this thread started as a discussion about challenge topics for expert editing ruleset. I believe the OP's comment had some merit (although I'm not a big fan of Expert in general). :-)

So if we had a "basic landscape" or "traditional landscape"- expert editing. Wouldnt that call for enhanced rather than alternate realities? Actually, a post apocalyptic landscape would be fine, its the naked firewings and standing on 50 chairs that often pushes it too far...

Yes. It is insertion of people and the fantasy characters that make it feel "graphic novel-esque."

not necessarily. landscape is pretty general, "aliens" on the other hand practically encourages everyone who enters to create something, because its not a subject than can be easily photographed.

Unless you live (or can visit) a certain area in southern Nevada. ;-)
