we have one, now its only fair to give equal opportunity to the other.

Equal opportunity? This isn't Canada, Mike... ;-p

If it must be done can we do them both this week instead of the playoffs?!

One doesn't require the other.

Minimal is about photography talent, which is what the DPL should be about.

Expert is about digital editing talent (starting with great photos sure), but should not be included in the DPL.

My one vote.

I'm a fan of the occasional minimal editing challenge. I'm not against an Expert challenge for DPL, but IMHO Minimal is more in the spirit of the site and levels the playing field moreso that Expert would.

As far as I'm concerned, the Side by Side has pretty much evolved into an expert editing challenge. Let's hope that's it for the regular season.

I don't read every forum thread. What do you mean? Was something officially announced? I understand the Side-by-side challenge is Advanced editing with a specific special rule. Were other things added for a few?

I would read this thread, Richard. No, you can't do excessive cloning or add stuff from lots of images, but the part about allowing one photo to "reach" into the other requires the kind of editing that goes right along with Expert IMO. I don't think I'll take advantage of it, but I think there will be quite a few entries that are not just side by sides or one on top of the other.
Side by Side

that would be a dq if that occurred. the side by side challenge is just lining up two distinct images creatively.

Not pet Bear's reply in the thread and the ArtROFLMAO photo referenced. You have two images and can use layer masking.

Therein lies the rub, imho those (currently me included) that 'blur' the distinct images are going to find their image is a point or 2 below it's anticipated resting place as not everybody bothers to fully read the challenge description or thread :(

Well there is that.

side by side still isn't expert, its worse. its a mish mash of rules.

Kind of the equivalent of minimal but allowing crop and rotate.

Opinions differ, photography has rarely ever only been about what you capture in camera.

Whoa... Parts? So we can mask out stuff from one to get it to fit with another? That does seem more expert editing and kinda defeats the purpose of the side by side. I thought the whole idea was to do something photoshoppish without the photoshopping. This takes away a lot of the difficulty.

Once a challenge is announced, the specific editing ruleset understood and extra rules clear, then special interpretations and rules revisions should halt. Okay to make things better for the next time, but it really hurts those who prepared an image two days ago, based on the official proclamations. Furthermore, it's not reasonable to expect all members to read every forum thread. Especially when there is league play in process, it's not fair to alter rules midstream in obscure forum threads.

I don't think they were altered. I think they were just explored and explained. There's no reason to question if things are crystal clear. So while I wish it was just straight edge against straight edge, I think it's better to ask the questions when things are as clear as mud. :)

We haven't altered a thing, the challenge is exactly as it was posted, and will remain so. The only thing we did is to make the link in the flagged rules clickable.

How is this NOT clear? How much clearer could we be?

I sure couldn't figure out how to do this without photoshop.... I'm getting a crash course in layers which is a good thing, but kind of stressful on such a tight timeline. Is there anyway to do this challenge without photoshop? I would love to hear how that would work....
