So I got this e-mail yesterday, and there are enough red flags in it that I'm considering it to definitely be a scammer fishing for something. I'm just curious to know whether any of you have received something similar, and what exactly they're trying to accomplish?

(Note that they introduce themselves as one person, sign the note as another... are asking about "available dates" as though they're planning the reunion around my availability... they never ask for pricing... the English is rather broken, and written like you'd see in other scams... and so forth...

Hello,

I'm Mary Lawrence . How are you ? I'll like to know your free available date in August for my family reunion (5 hours photo coverage). Also i want family portraits done for all the families coming together for the reunion. Do you accept credit card payment ? I got you contact information from the internet.

Thanks
Robert

they are looking for someone stupid enough to reply. from there it goes to booking for a shoot, over-paying in advance with a check and asking that the difference be returned via western union or something similar.

it all starts with "stupid enough to reply"

I would look up Mary and Robert Lawernce in your area. Maybe you can find that they are nearby residents and you could chat over the phone. It's possible her typing skills are not great, and she is using her husband's email (with default signature).

I can easily see this being my grandma typing out an email, and fumbling through it.

That's definitely where they were going with this. I was intentionally stupid enough to reply, just because I like screwing with these people and figuring out what they were trying to pull on me.

In subsequent conversations, they mentioned wanting to pay 60% in advance by credit card. I continued to press them for a date and location for this "reunion," and he gave me an address 5 hours away from here. I told him I wasn't traveling that far, and haven't heard back from him/her yet.

I too received a suspicious email this morning. The URL was NOT the same as the dpchallenge URL.

Well, that definitely wasn't us. If we wanted you to justify your existence I'd be the first to know about it :-)
