Was very surprised to get so many low votes on my feathers entry so appreciate some feedback on what was so terrible about it. I felt it was a strong photograph but I am obviously not seeing some major failings.

I LOVED it! It meets the challenge description, lighting is great, colours are awesome, composition is great. The foot stepping out gives it some life. No distracting elements. I laughed to myself when I saw this was your shot. I have decided I must like your style :)

I thought the image was great, very clear with beautiful lighting, defining the feathers and the eyes and face. I will never understand this site, I have no idea how anyone can give you votes such as 1 and 2 for this image

Beats me. I voted it fairly high. Well composed, good colors, real live feathers, and a chicken strut. Not sure what you could have done different.

I voted a 6 on that one... for me, it was a chicken, they don't do anything for me except for make awesome meals and eggs

.

Technically I agree it was strong... but it wasn't a wow for me

You've got less lowest votes than mine! Voters were more consistent with your image than mine... Your image is fine technically but probably lost in originality !

I gave it a six. It is technically outstanding (exposure, colors, tack sharp, well-composed). I vote with two passes of the images. First time, I vote only 5 or 6 on an initial assessment of whether I like the photo or not in the broadest sense. I like this photo. The second pass I either leave the score alone (5 or 6) or adjust (6s upward, 5s downward). In this case I didn't like it well enough to bump it up. Why? It's a chicken portrait. Not particularly engaging on any but a technical basis. I suspect this is the common theme among your middle to low voters. Frankly, I can't imagine why 9 percent of the voters would give such a technically excellent photo less than a 5. Chicken haters, apparently (and evenly distributed between participant and non-participants).

6 from me, too. I thought it was excellent for all the reasons stated. Didn't quite wow me enough to get the bump.

I voted 7. It has many feather in all different directions all well defined and in focus. A bouquet of feathers on a real live model.

7 from me. No idea why it ended up where it did. A chicken with attitude!

Thank you everyone for the feedback. It is reassuring to get such good feedback. I appreciate it must be lacking the wow factor but didn't think it deserved 10 votes of 4 - I generally only give out a 4 if something has serious technical issues or is generally pretty terrible:)

I agree didn't deserve that many 4's for sure. I did give you a 6 though, technically it was good, lovely shallow dof, but no WOW factor :P)

I gave you 8. As I said in the comment, I really like it. I can't for the life of me see how it could get sub 5, let alone 1 or 2.

Paul I gave it a 6, but only because it was very well taken. A chicken is a chicken and in the photo there were no special twist to make it special. Those are not so many low votes, I expected it to score worse than that.

Thanks Alex for your honest feedback - it is really helpful to hear feedback like this to get a better idea of voter expectations.

Yea, it was all good but really boring as others have mentioned.
06/29/2015 04:02:54 AM · #18
For me, all the action wasin the head and shoulders. Had you cropped up to that, my 6 would have turned into a 7!

all subject and no verb, no story, no emotional connection. at this point in the history of the games, the mix of dpc voters require a bit more than a technically proficient photo to significantly move the needle. (and you've been around long enough to know there will NEVER be a satisfactory explanation for sub-5 votes.)

Thanks Skip - all the feedback has been really helpful and I will be aiming to capture some X-Factor in future for these challenges. I think as I have been submitting a lot of stock photos lately I have been concentrating on the technical side of the photos and ignoring the emotion. Incidentally the chicken shot was accepted for stock so at least it achieved something:)

I gave it a 7. Cute chicken. I don't really think your low voters are going to give you an actual reason. Mine scored lower than yours and only received one comment. I thought about asking for feedback, but...
06/29/2015 09:14:13 AM · #22
I gave it a 7, as to why so many 4s, I never give a 5, so some of my average photos will get a 4. Some folks raced thru so many entries and may have saw average. That saying, this image is better than average, it's sharp, composed, and great color. It is missing an element to push it to the front page. Your score should have been a wee bit higher.

I daresay some of those low votes were precisely BECAUSE it was well taken / technically proficient :)

Personally, I think it was an outstanding image for the challenge and I gave it a 9. There's a real presence to that chicken IMO, and the POV and detail are outstanding. I wouldn't give it a 9 in a free study, but given the "feathers" topic, I liked this one. I can understand that images that told a tale fared better across the board, there were a lot of good ones, but in my mind that takes nothing away from your accomplishment here...

The color, exposure, focus, and sharpness are outstanding. Compositionally though, it has a very 2-dimensional feeling to it. Plus some may not like feet being lost ...
