I had a photo shoot stumble into me today (that i'm not allowed to discuss), due in large part to taking my camera to a venue I was at for an intended setup for the "abstract green" challenge. I Can say that I took some of my finest photos today, and it's hugely in part to many of the members here who have kicked my butt, making me improve (even though my entries here do not adequately express what i'm capable of).
I've already proofed the images with the body of people I shot for today, and they were very happy and quite impressed with my on-the-spot "pulling it together".
Sometimes volunteering for the "lousy assignments" can have unintended benefits, and I just gained a lot of renown with some very influential people that can help put in a good word when it counts!

Good on you Ryan, looking forward to viewing the image. I've nearly always been successful when someone had told me "you can do better than that" it's inspired me to achieve my best results. Go forward man!

Unfortunately I was unable to take a shot for the challenge, and the photos I did take are now classified as "protected: for official use only" by more than one country. if you happen to work for one of these particular establishments, you will see them circulated in their next newsletters or on internal websites, otherwise the general population will never be able to see them.
kind of a bummer that I can't showcase any of them here... they're not incredibly original (would actually make very good stock photos), but they Are of a high quality and they're what was asked for by the client.

I feel like the boy who cried wolf, except that it's real, and the wolf can be seen if you have a secret decoder ring. :)

I run in elite circles and have Grade A security clearance so I have seen the photo. It is every bit as amazing as he says it is. Well done, Ryan!

Happy for you Ryan. Sometimes things just fall into place, but you have to throw them around a long time before they fall just right.

They're the type of people who can provide job security with a few words to my boss.
In our current "corporate" environment (I work for the Canadian Govt in a Nat'l security related agency), there are constant threats on the horizon, looming job cuts to save taxpayer money and make the existing incumbent party look good to the people by saving money (while cutting services).
As mentioned previously, the rights to these pics belong to more than one country, and they all have expressed gratitude as this particular event hadn't been photographed beyond a "generic group shot" before, so having me cleared and in the room for a few days with them, along with my camera on the last day, I was able to get some pretty unique imagery for them. It would look much like "generic boardroom stock photos" and "generic document signing", but it's a big deal for these people to be able to go home to their respective countries/agencies/departments and say "Here we are discussing X" and "Here is the group of us signing this int'l agreement on (subject redacted)". :)

Our internal communication group didn't have anybody free that day with valid clearance, so I got to go "on".

Partly, it's also the lens (used the 35/1.8 as it's consistently my sharpest lens, set to f/2.8 for document signing, gave a nice bokeh with the river/trees showing between the flags in the background, while keeping the flags recognizable but soft, and the document oof so that nobody can actually read what's written on it from the pic).
Also was able to use backlighting and fill flash to nicely frame our "head hancho" displaying a plaque he received, set against the room with the round-table and scenic vista backdrop, something I would not have been able to do before I started here. (sounds so simple now, but it was a 100% foreign concept in how to make it work before I started on the site).

I'm also really excited because it was my first time flying solo on this new task, so I have the added adrenaline rush of pulling everything together successfully on top of the photography bit. :)
(I feel very much like MAKs avatar looks at the moment...

What a wonderfully successful week for you! Congrats on seizing the moment when it presented itself!

Ah, the irony of a communication group that, um, can't. ..

I too work in a security related environment for the Government of Canada and my job is sooooooooo secret that they can't even tell me about it.

How secret is that eh?

now what has our beloved Canada signed away? reassuring that Ryan is in possession (?) of some documentation of the whole sorry story.
