Is a DPC average score an accurate representation of how "good" a photo is?

Just stirring the pot a little. Thanks for indulging me.

haha you should no better than that!

And btw the answer is emphatically NO!

Even a good photo gets scored 1 because someone deemed it's DNMC so there you go

On DPC the answer is not necessarily. An image can be good. And an image can meet the challenge. Sometimes both. A good score usually is given to those.

But the score is not a good indication of the quality of an image in a challenge situation. The reason why so many images that do "poorly" here go on to have a great life when shared elsewhere.

Yes. Those who score consistently well are very good photographers.

First, define 'good' ;-)

I think highly scoring images often meet my definition of 'good'. But there are also good images that don't score highly. (And there are occasional top ten scoring images that make me wonder what I am missing because I didn't think they were that 'good')

So to me, the answer to your question is not necessarily.

Images I take meet my definition of fun. I am working to improve their goodness.

in a certain context, yes.

It's like asking whether the winner of American Idol is the best.

Yep,

Can of worms for sure, but I am sure this has been beaten with a dead horse many times before, to which I think I am exhausted to even think about anymore. I just say F* it and then do what I want, how I want not caring how it scores. My last few weeks have been atrociously low with the last few challenges starting out at 1's, so whatever..LOL Bring it on

Having fun and exploring different options and keeping my mind open to shooting different things for the challenges keeps me motivated enough to say on this site along with the great people and friends I have made here. Just something I will never understand here at DPC on what consists of good photos and what people are looking for because tastes are so different here, when someone figures it out, please let me know then.

now lets all hold on a bit. As long as I keep getting top ten finishes, the answer may turn out to be an emphatic "yes!"

No correlation at all - otherwise my photos would score much better.

Perfect correlation, that's why mine are all at the bottom.

Remember that the "average score" is that - a statistical number applicable to a pool of information.

So as our pool of photographs are all Lucie statue winner contenders, the most average of image here is already the best in the known universe.

What score means "sublime" and what score means "meh"? Does the ratio of those two scores correspond to the ratio between sublime and meh? The highest possible ratio is 10:1. Does this ratio correspond to the ratio between Beethoven's Fifth Symphony conducted by von Karajan and Yo_Spiff's kazoo rendition of Camptown Races?

Then we get a FS winner like the current Magpie Ninja shot that just blows the competition away: No 1's, no 2's, no 3's, no 4's, and only three 5's... Just a stellar image, appreciated as better-than-average even by the folks who prefer other types of work than the sharp-nature genre :-)

and a rain winner who gets a DPC blue and a posthumous blue.

Hey, YEAH! Didn't even notice that. Awesome.

Perhaps a slight tangent but I just went to look at my "Favorites" to try to choose one overall favorite image (slow day I guess). And I was unable to choose. I was also curious about why some images have so many / so few faves. The really interesting ones are the images that only I favorited ... kind of nice to see that we all have different taste sometimes.

The best images receive an average score of about 5.4110.
05/08/2015 02:25:58 PM · #25
LOL

Who could argue that there is anyone more deserving of being the best than this person?
