Not a technique I like. I've never really seen a picture with it where I've thought, "Wow, that really adds to the picture!"

So I'm really looking forward to the picture contest opening for voting tonight.

Hoping to be wowed and having my view of selective coloring changed.

The truth is I have no idea why I don't much care for it. I just plumb don't

Go take a look at Selective Desaturation 1 & 2, I'm sure you can find something you like.

I know where you are coming from, Valerie. There is a lot of bad selectively desaturated images out there, and I am not generally a fan. However, I did like LevT's recent:

After looking at it I can see that it actually can been done well. After playing around with some images for this challenge, I have decided that doing anywhere near well isn't easy. My attempts so far have failed pretty spectacularly.

But, I did put a dog into the show. Everyone I have showed it to loves it, we will see how it does.

welcome toe DPC, where good processing is shunned and gimmick is not only accepted but encouraged and revered.

Mark, I'm pretty sure Lev didn't use select desaturation here, you can tell there are brown hues in the photo and not black and white. But I see the angle your coming from.

I was thinking the saturation was lowered/very muted, but not by 100%.

Only one way to find out :)

Having seen Lev's original during validation, I can say this is NOT a partial-desaturation image. It was basically a monochromatic scene with some intense yellows in it.

There are a few reasons it is commonly shunned by photographers, IMHO.

- it is used by amateurs, "faux"tographers, and many beginners think they are showing off mad editing skills by using it.
- it tends to look like it is trying to make an ordinary photo exceptional, and fails. We've all seen so many poor images.
- the editing is overly obvious - which is not normally a good thing
- the colors are often exaggerated, and therefor adds to the fake look.
- some dream in black-n-white. some dream in pastels. some dream in color. no one dreams in selective desaturation.

Still not sure if I should have used it here - either way, I didn't do it very well LOL

I've entered two selective desat shots and both of them actually had some positive feedback. I think it can work if done well and in the proper type of shot. I think it worked well for me with the shot below because it was not made for dramatic effect but for more of a lighthearted humorous effect

Selective coloring/ desaturation is...

...an abomination. It's right up there with star and kaleidoscope filters.

There are few instances where it could add impact - not always. I was pondering over submitting this image for the challenge:

(outtake hidden while challenge is still in voting)

But then decided to use another one that I liked better though none of these were taken for the challenge but to me they work well for it. Something I am learning by looking at other images is that variable desaturation is an option as well - not every time it needs to be 100% desaturated.
