Before submitting an entry everyone is required to acknowledge that they've read (and followed) the challenge rules.

I think if people want to skip reading the rules and just lie about having done so, they should be prepared to suffer the (possible) consequences ...

In a vacuum at they would fall at the same speed.

In that scenario you are absolutely right. Other than under those conditions, not so much.

You mean these comments? I had to count backwards to find them as I have my threads reversed, but I think these are the ones you mean:
#11 Correct. You would need to enter it into the FS that is open at the time you shot the picture. When you are within hours of deadlines care is certainly needed.
#23 Yes they should - or get them into the FS that is still open. Any image taken can be submitted to a Free Study.

I really should give up as I don't seem to be making myself clear, but I'll give it one more try.

Free study shooting very close to end of month example. Take a picture with time and date set for YOUR time zone. Go immediately to computer and look to see what Free Study is Open. Enter that FS and when you do so, be sure to put WHERE you are, where you were at the moment you took the picture. Submit. Your entry will be validated for time and date - regardless of what your local calendar or clock may say.

If we address specifically this comment: "On a regular weekly challenge, EVERYONE has exactly 168 hours to enter. On a free study, EVERYONE has 720-744 hours (except February) to enter." then I seriously doubt it.

When the challenge is posted in NYC, some 14 hours have passed in Australia and the submission must be made by midnight EST on the closing date.

Show me just how one recoups the 14 hours lost at the onset of the challenge.

If Aussie can manage to know such things, then best I contact them about the winning lotto tickets and I won't have to work anymore. :O)

Challenges start and end at midnight in New York. Challenges start and end at 9pm in Los Angeles. Challenges start and end at 4am in Iceland. Challenges start and end at 5am in London. Challenges start and end at 7am in Johannesburg. Challenges start and end at 3pm in Brisbane. No one is losing any time. Everyone has the same start and end time. Those are all the same moment in time.

In your example, you are quoting local time for the start of challenge, and EST time for close of challenge. Pick on or the other. Then the math will work for you.

Everyone's "week" starts at a different time. Everyone finds out the challenge topic at the exact same time every week. The fact that we have time zones makes the time of day different, but it's always at the same time.

Ray, the Aussies in your example would have 14 hours past midnight to enter. So technically their exif data could be a day past the submission deadline. It's easyto not get caught on the backend: If you can enter you can enter. It's the front end that's tricky. An Aussie who takes a photo in the morning of January 1 isn't eligible to enter that in the Best of January challenge. But they could enter a photo taken in the first 14 or so hours of February.

Actually it would be the last hours of the December FS.

Right, I didn't word that well. I meant to say that a photo shot in the first hours of February could be entered in the January challenge.

State the date/time in GMT and everyone will know exactly what time it is. Or at least should know.

Especially for those in Greenwich.
The UK Greenwich....

I sleep every night. That really cuts into my shooting time. Can we please change the submission dates dynamically to coincide with my sleep cycles?

Rollover happens at midnight here, and that's way too late for me to watch the new scores come in. West coast has it just about perfect! Let's change the server to west cost time!

Then you'd have to be up at 3am to watch rollover. Switch server time to GMT and we'll be able to watch at 7pm.

i really think we all out switch our cameras to the same time, i mean the goal is to get it all right in camera, to learn how our camera works? plus it would be a great way to show our unity.

I have no problem understanding the rules, my first DQ.
BUT:
In the past i have seen top 5 photos that do the same without DQ.
So local or server time depends on the judge, not the rule!
So saying that I can shoot to 4 AM local time doesen't matter. I'm never gonna trust that another judge wont give me DQ for that.
And I'm been reading this forum for many years so arguing with the judges is something I look at as pointless waist of time, so I rather skip that.

Obviously my mistake thou, I'm certain you can dig up some more jokes about it.

Over and out.

Right now I'm in Greece. Rollover's at 7AM here. Awesome time for rollover! Plus I just had some killer grilled octopus in a tiny Taverna on a tiny shingled beach on Santorini where the family cooks what their own boat brings in. So Greece is good :-)

Back to the regular programming...

I've not seen the rules applied differently by different council members, regarding start and stop times, ever.

When you register, the site records your location. Your entry times are taken into account, as compared to the server time. If you set your camera time to server time, it could cause you problems, because the site adjusts your time for the time difference.

The duration of the challenge is the same for all. East of the servers, the challenges start after midnight, all the way to the international dateline. West of the server, the challenges start before midnight, all the way to the international dateline.

The site could use GMT, or any other time zone, and it would still work the same. Somebody's challenge would not start, or end at midnight.

It is never funny, nor a joking matter, when someone gets a DQ.

You are dedicated! I hope Langdon gave you some time off from duties for your cruise

Well, if they wanted to the site could refuse entries trying to come in after closing.
