Posting Thread

Attention all bird brains! It's that time of year again... let's get the ball rolling.
The goal of this side challenge is to photograph as many separate species of bird possible. So get your long lenses out and start walking softly, it's time to start creeping on our avian neighbors. Challenge runs from April 1st-30th. You can check out last year if you're curious about how this will be run.

Participants are encouraged to help others with ID, beginners and professionals appreciated, you'll never believe how many species live around you until you try this challenge out. Sign up here, the posting thread will be created just before April 1st. Side challenge runs for the full duration of April. Aim for pics that can be used to accurately ID the species. And in regard to the identification; make an attempt yourself if possible. If you have no clue but think it's a new one for you, go ahead and post as an unidentified and our fellow bird folk will try to help out. Likewise if you think you see a discrepancy in identification, kindly point it out and we'll get it figured out amongst the crowd. Many birds look drastically different depending upon gender, age, condition, or even region, so don't feel bad if you get some accidental duplicates.

Hmmm. Crows, seagulls, pigeons, pelicans. Wanna see any of those? To be fair, I don't shoot a lot of birds, other than street pigeons, but it might be fun to try!

It's fun stuff! I participated last year and had a good time. Don't worry about masterpiece challenge entries, do the best you can, it's about the idea of getting out and seeing as much as you can. Here is last year's thread. I'll count you in for the time being :)

Might give it a try. Was a day out the other day with some bird watchers, and it turned out there were much more duck species in the pond then I imagined. Could be fun to do.

Is it still going to be like that thread where we just keep adding to our own post? Any other rules?

I did this last year and had a blast. I traveled last April, so I photographed a lot of birds that aren't indigenous to my corner of country, so it was fun identifying them.

Life changes, however, will prevent my participation this year, but I'll be watching the thread.

I'm in! Thanks for setting it up. It's always a fun challenge.

Oh yeah ... put me down for sure! Just picked up a (new to me) used Asahi 300/4 in M42 mount I've been playing with. :-)

I'll do it this year.

PS - my longest lens is 200... Probably won't be getting any serious closeups, other than pigeons. They like me. :)

I think doing it like last year will be best from a non-cluttering standpoint. Post new photos to your collection in the forum periodically, not all of them (there were people with 50+ last year, I think somebody might've topped 70, which would make things super cluttered). No editing rules other than obviously keeping photos from within the challenge time frame.

Melethia- all you need to do is make them so you can identify them! Get some photos of the invasive parrots down there, and engage your inner ninja to sneak up :)

Kroburg- that's one of the things I realized last year, as well, was how many species of ducks really live around here.

I'm in. I'm going to be on the coast of South Carolina for the entire last weekend of March just to shoot birds so I'll be primed - too bad it doesn't start until April 1st :(

The parrots! I know where a bunch of them live. :) PS, when do we start??

This is all I used to shoot and I got so tired of it.

I'm in. ;)

I'm going to try and keep everything within 10 miles of my house in NW NJ. No traveling for a bird.

"Big Month" would imply shots need to be taken between April 1 & April 30, I believe.

This is correct, and clarification added to initial post.

Actually, on second thought, put me on the list. I'll at least shoot some birds on the feeder outside my dining room window. And it might encourage e to actually go out and shoot, too.

I can't not participate in this! Sign me up, I've done it for the past 3 years, have to do it again this year.
