If it makes you feel any better, I began in ribbon territory and I'm now clearly in "meh-land." :)

i decided to enter, doing right about where I expected. currently 5.8ish.

4.7 after 10 votes...I wasn't very heavy handed with the orton effect and applied it mildly. Looks like the voters expect HEAVY DUTY orton effect or maybe they haven't even got a clue what to look for. My image is certainly not worth a measly 4.7 I reckon it is worth at least a 5.8 to 6.2

That may be true in challenges such as this. I was very heavy handed with the effect on my entry as i thought i'd see how far i could push it without actually vomiting and i'm currently at 6.4. It's sure to drop a lot but i figured it would come in at around 6 or so. My entry was one of those rare times when i thought i'd try to enter something to please the voters. Contrast that with my Games entry which i actually like and is at a 4.2, the type of score where i'm generally more at home.

Just getting into voting (after months of absence) and I'm pretty underwhelmed so far. Not that my entry is great, but I am surprised at all of the black and white ones. Didn't Orton always use color? Ok, off to vote. Hoping for some to blow me away!!

I think you're right on this and I knew it when I entered - as rooum says, it's to be expected in this sort of challenge. The cool thing would be to see the before and after the effect images - then the effect would be more noticeable and we could really see what it did for - or to! - a given image. The difference in mine was definitely noticeable, but I don't think it will be to the voters.

Same for me. I don't like Orton effect, unless it's used just to enhance a little bit the colors (but still I never use it). In any case it's always good to experiment and try :)

I just did a quick look through the entries, and I saw some really good ones. My score is only 5.7 so... looks like the voters don't think mine is one of them. *snif* Later I'll go make some comments.

I am gonna have a party at the bottom with a camp fire, great music with my guitar pulled out and drinks and the open skies above

Will wait for someone to come down to enjoy it with me.. I thought I had something decent but then again

This was a fun challenge, learned a new technique, still think I had the wrong kind of photo to apply it too.

HAHAHA Sounds great! The cooler will be full :-))

There are some beautiful images in this challenge I think! It will be hard to choose my top three
I kinda like the softer effect instead of the heavily ones..

I would like an answer to the black and white question though..

I'm with Julie jgirl57 when she says, "I would like an answer to the black and white question though.."

I, too, thought part of the reason for applying this technique was to enhance colors. Just wondering.

This is from Orton's website:

"One of my trademark techniques was originally referred to as “Orton Imagery” by Photo Life magazine. This technique originated years ago with my efforts to imitate watercolor paintings by simply placing the images out of focus and if you have seen pen and ink and watercolor combinations, you will understand where the inspiration to add detail comes from.

The original technique involved sandwiching two or three transparencies of the same composition together. One slide contains the detail component, in focus and overexposed, the second and /or the third is the color component, and is out of focus and overexposed."

This from the challenge: Choose an appropriate scene and make effective use of The Orton Effect this week.

Nothing says anything about color or black and white. Before you say it says "watercolor paintings" I have some amazing B&W watercolor paintings that I bought in China years ago. Watercolor is a type of paint, nothing to do with the color or lack of color.

This is just my take on it. My photo almost was turned B&W but at the last minute went with the color version for reasons I can't state here without giving away my photo.

I didn't realize Orton was a real person. How on earth do i come up with a original horrible processing technique and then name it after myself...
