To me the expert challenges gives me a chance to see something I've never seen before and maybe never have imagined. Or maybe I did but never saw it in an image before.
If you dig through the forums you'll find a few quotes like these.
There's nothing new under the sun
Is there really, truly ANYTHING left that hasn't been done before by someone, in some form?
It's all been done before.

Is it so wrong to see a unicorn frog with wings once in a while?

I'm pretty sure nobody has ever taken nude pictures of me before, so THAT'S something new under the sun! There's some video footage out there of me from back in high school that is *almost* nude in front of the entire school assembly, along with general public at our Winter Carnival talent show, but that's an amusing story for another day... :)

I see Expert Editing as a chance for folks to enter images from EVERY editing rule set. Nothing/no one is excluded.

Whereas... the Minimal or Basic or even Advanced... all exclude folks who like other rulesets.

If I don't like a challenge... for whatever reason... I just don't enter it.

I entered Advanced lately (plus text, but it wasn't necessary in my opinion) in Expert. I was pleasantly surprised with my results in the score.

I challenge you to enter a Minimal or Basic entry in an Expert-ruled challenge and score in the top ten.

If you do, let me know. I'll buy your next year's membership. (Only one membership offer is made. But, there's no time deadline.)

I vote on every challenge and I look forward the most to the expert ones. It's so fun to see members tring out new tricks and open up their creativity, who cares if they can't compete with the usual suspects, I just enjoy what they came up with. As far as the usual suspects go, they create a lot of inspiration and motivation for members to beat them. I haven't entered an expert in a while, but have learned a few tricks thinking about it, please keep them coming.

I say long live expert, i will no longer vote on, enter one or click on one but that's simply because I don't like what I see, I find them cartoonish and false. I do think though that we should have expert, every taste should be dealt and just because I hate the look and the idea doesn't mean I don't want them.

I'm pretty much in the same camp as John. I don't enter many challenges anyway, so it's not about the entering part. I used to vote a lot more - pretty much every challenge, but have no interest in the expert challenges so don't bother even looking at them. The more there are of them, the less I participate, but doesn't mean they shouldn't exist.

Yes it seems that the amount of participants in an expert challenge isn't as high as an advanced, steampunk only had 28, this would indicate that other people feel like myself and Sara and too many expert challenges may lead to fewer participants in general. I suppose too many minimal would do the same.

I used to think that this was a photography site and it used to rile me when there were too many expert challenges, this is no longer the case and thats partly because what I see rewarded in none expert challenges doesn't inspire me at all, the images that I think are fantastic get stupidly low scores. I reckon we should have more posthumous type things on the side to cater for odd balls like me.

I quite like Expert, less so for the heavy manipulation of photos but more for the possibility of a bit of graphic design and collage - particularly now text is allowed. I've always enjoyed designing book covers/posters/cd covers etc. It suits those sorts of challenges well. Saying that though, the ruleset i enjoy the most is Minimal as it give me the most pleasure of simply working with a camera. My feeling is that there should be an equal amount of Expert/Minimal with Advanced being the most common. A 6:2:2 mix would be the ideal. Basic, is, quite rightly, dead as a dodo.

I don't have the time or skill to do what Christoph and others do but I admire his creativity and drive to get from a to b in a week

It's a skill to create what he does different to us that capture it, I'd like to learn more skills to enter expert but I'm time poor of late

When I first joined I used to think and vote very narrow was it sharp in focus main stream stuff all the posthumous abd bvy stuff was rubbish can't they hold a camera steady

Now 4 or 5 years on i find these are the shots I like the best and what I'm drawn to when editing, I was looking back through my old analogue stuff the other day and miss the grain and texture of it

Got my medium format out and fired a few roles through it, take it with me now when I go out photographing

That's what we did with red in October, would have made sense to do orange in basic or minimal.

There was also a minimal in January (Ghost) as well. I was quite surprised at the choice of minimal for that particular subject.

I thought the choice of Minimal for Ghost was perfect and really produced some great images. The simple colour challenges like Red or Orange don't hold much interest for me. I think they are quite boring, lazy challenges really.

i think if we opened up the advanced ruleset we could limit the quantity of expert challenges.
02/20/2015 09:20:46 AM · #90
I agree with you - especially when I look at the majority of my own so-called "expert" stuff LOL.
And, of course, no one said "let's get rid of expert" ...
My understanding of the OP was that the trend was toward MORE Expert challenges and FEWER Minimal challenges and he was simply questioning that trend. If anything, maybe this thread got some gears going. A new minimal challenge was announced! =)

If only....

I just find it sad that people think expert means a certain type of image. The ruleset does not determine the content. It can just as easily be a landscape with clouds added, or a bland sky replaced with a more dramatic one.

I don't know why or when copying Christophe's (or anyone else's) style became the only acceptable one. There are numerous techniques (such as double exposures) which are totally camera-centric, and not allowed in advanced.

And though it's been said, many times, many ways, it is possible to ribbon in expert with an image created with advanced, even minimal, techniques.

actually in the case of DPC it does. often the ruleset is chosen based on the topic. expert editing challenges tend to be those that encourage composites and minimal has on occasion been chosen to encourage certain technique, ghosts for instance was minimal and one could infer that double camera exposures and long shutters would be the norm as they were.

IMO i prefer that be the case, having expert editing for "Landscape 7" would feel out of place and having minimum for "Holiday card 5" would be awkward as well.

This tread is a great example why people stop being members. Sure did it for me.

This place is way too clicky.

Rather than arguing about this subject, look at the numbers . Participation in last two expert challenges was in mid 20's . Impressive??

What used to make this place special is the fact that it was about photography.

Expert editing is way more about photoshop shenanigans than photography.

I hate to say it but this is probably true.

Oh, i don't know. People are always blaming declining membership and entries on something whether it's Expert or bickering in the forums. I think the truth is probably a combination of a lot of things. Websites mostly have finite lifespans and it's unreasonable to expect things to chug along year after year without any change. We have things like Flickr and 500px and numerous other places to compete with these days. I'm sure that has more to do with it than whatever this thread is an example of.

Are there any other sites like DPC on the web, not popularity based ones but actual challenge sites with enough members to count ? I don't get out much so I'm pretty ignorant about the web.

I don't know to be honest, i imagine there are some similar ones. I was just thinking that there was a much wider range of places to share photos and such online than what there was even five years ago.
