I'm with you smardaz. I actually was surprised by gyaban's post. Seemed quite snarky from someone who normally comes off as an extremely helpful contributor to the site.

I'll give you +1 whatever the #*@$ that means. Not sure I'm qualified to give more unless I am counting my kids or my multiple personalities.

I didn't take the OP as whiny and that's why I posted my response. And I never had a personal problem with Gyaban, I'm neither a supporter nor detractor for him, just didn't care for what I thought was the tone of his reply. But I guess, as you so eloquently put it, I should just "stfu" and move on.

Didn't seem to me the OP deserved that, just looked like an innocent enough observation/question. But, hey, that's the internet for you nowadays, everyone is a keyboard warrior....

Just for the record when ever there is a discussion on an expert editing challenge gyaban and samantha_t are ALWAYS the pin cushion. They take a tremendous amount of needling and rarely needle back.
I don't see anything wrong with gyaban's post.

As for nikonjeb's post, that was WAY out of line and I'm VERY surprised is was not already deleted.

Since when did DPC become as combative as all the other sites? The OP asks a legitimate question. And it gets to the heart of what this site is all about. The site has also always had very responsive, helpful, forums. He wasn't whining or being ignorant.

If you feel the need to be so combative, maybe go to another site. Or go comment on some YouTube vids.

Personally, I thought Christophe's reply was much too eloquent to call snarky. If you decide you need to define elsewhere as off site as opposed to a challenge more suited to your tastes, then that's on you. I know I've certainly got the sh*ts of people bitching that this or that doesn't suit them......just STFU already, and move on. Don't want to participate in an Expert challenge? Don't! Don't like the challenge topic? Don't enter that challenge. Hate the Rant forum? Turn it off! But think of someone other than yourself before you start another self-serving indulgent thread just because you didn't get your way.

Now......did you like Christophe's gentle way, or do you like being slapped?
02/18/2015 02:38:18 PM · #55
That was kind of my point.......no, my post wasn't pleasant, and Christophe's was exasperated. The difference was that his was eloquent, and the whole thread's a dead horse anyway.

Barry knows that as well.......what was the purpose other than to provoke?

Oh, and smardaz, the comment to be quiet was more directed at glad2badad.

And yes, it was unnecessary and out of line.

Just out of curiosity, where does the line get drawn? How many whining registering discontent threads does it take for someone who has been around for years to understand that it's irrelevant and destructive?

I'm not sure if that was a jab at me or not. Lots of ambiguity in text.

But anyway, I'm not sure the entire question in the OP has been answered.
There has been ONE minimal edit challenge since October 2014. There has been ZERO basic edit challenges since October 2013.

So is the question really deserving of so much ridicule? He and I have both been around DPC (on and off at least) for several years. Maybe we are nostalgic, just old, or would prefer challenges from a simpler time ... but geez.

It's been combative in certain circustances as long as I've been here. People get fed up with the same old garbage with no solutions. And his comment about killing his average is totally self-serving. It's his choice to enter or not. what's so tough about that? Christophe's post got quite a few supporters right off the bat.

Really??? How? I can understand the request for more Minimal challenges, but the complaining about Expert challenges makes no sense. Just don't enter. No action required.

Originally posted by tate:

Um.....the site is DP Challenge. Expert editing is a ruleset for a challenge. How is complaining about challenges what this site is all about?

Originally posted by tate:

Yes. And asking for more Minimal challenges would be something that could be responded to and instituted. But that doesn't mean that another ruleset based challenge has to suffer. I would imagine that the ratio has something to do with requests for the challenge type.

Originally posted by tate:

When part of the basis sounds like a complaint, and the post is negative in tone, it sounds like whiningt. BUT......YMMV.

Okay.....so now you're telling me to leave? That's better how?

This is a site that is here for photogs to get together, compete, learn, exchange ideas, and get exposure to photography & techniques from around the world. It's an outright steal for the paltry membership fee, and having been here for a week or two and seen so many people grow and flourish as photographers over time, I simply get tired of people bitching. Take what you need, try and help someone to pay it forward if you get something, enjoy yourself, participate in challenges, forums, GTGs, whatever. But when it doesn't hold anything more for you, why not simply lessen participation and/or move on/forward, whatever, and save the aggravation of griping? And yeah, every now and then someone's gonna take a shot at you if you bitch.

I believe that Basic was eliminated entirely.

Basic & Advanced were too close in definition.

We could use more Minimal challenges.

I still hear myself yelling in front of the TV: "please show us some good movie instead!" or "I don't care some like it, they are all imbeciles!" Then, one blessed day, I found a solution. It was very, very tricky, but it worked beautifully: I found out that my TV set came with a remote control, and... it let me change the channel! So unexpected, so incredible. It was the happiest day of my life. From that day, I always managed to avoid soccer: it is like it doesn't even exist :-)

Now of course, I don't know if this could work for you: the Internet is a very small place (I am not sure whether other websites even exist?). But who knows, you could give it a try: maybe you could find good stuff to look at somewhere else, making your life beautiful again. Best of luck!

You could always watch the Cricket World Cup

It seems our OP is threatening spend a lot of very low votes in Expert challenges.

If it looks like (to me) an entry that is not "photographic in nature", then yes, it gets a low vote. It's not a new process, or a new threat ... I've always applied the suggestion to "rate entries accordingly" for Expert challenges.

Just seems like we're getting more "Expert" challenges in the mix recently.

On a positive note, it's not so quiet around here today! :-D

Im pretty sure that last time this came up the unofficial consensus was that we do the simple challenges like colors in basic or mimimal.
That's what we did with red in October, would have made sense to do orange in basic or minimal.

Nope. No corrections required nor begging of forgiveness needed.

It would difficult to find anyone here that has voted them all. :-)

I know the ruleset is still there on the page, but I thought it wasn't used any longer.

I'd have to search the forums, but I thought there was a thread to that effect.

As far as I know, I have.
Aside from the TPL when I didn't hit 100%. Couldn't vote on my teams images.

Actually, I had just assumed that you had been talking about your scoring average, not your average vote given.

So possibly I should beg your forgiveness?

I'm SUCH a maroon!!! LOL!!!

edit: on second thought.... Not worth it.

Inviting others to leave, is not new here, and will probably never end.

It's actually quite easy to show that a cubic Hamiltonian graph is class 1 -- that is, that its edges can be properly colored using exactly as many colors as the maximum degree of G (which is 3). Let G be a cubic (i.e. 3-regular) Hamiltonian graph. Then G contains a Hamiltonian cycle, H. Each vertex of G must then be adjacent to exactly two edges of H. If we remove the edges of G which are also in H, then each remaining vertex must have degree 1. In other words, G - E(H) is a 1-regular graph -- or a disjoint set of edges. The order of G is then (necessarily) even, with each edge joining a pair of vertices. Hence, our Hamiltonian cycle H is Ck for some even k, and its edges in G can be properly colored with two colors. The remaining disjoint edges of G - E(H) can be colored with a single third color since none of these edges will be mutually adjacent. Hence G can be properly colored with three colors and is of class 1.

You didn't have to get into all that, Brian. I've known all along G was first class.
