No one kills in the name of atheism. He clearly killed in the name of anti Islam hatred. There is a difference, in that he killed for his 'positive' belief, not his lack of belief. Stupid bastard apparently believed all Muslims are members of ISIS.. smh.

That's not true. You could fully kill in the name of atheism, and there's so many killers around, it's most likely been done before.

Perhaps. But that would just be weird. Like killing someone in the name of Taco Bell.

Sure it's weird. Is there anything not weird about taking someone's life?

Depending on one's situation, perhaps not. Theatres of war come to mind where what you are advancing does not hold true, and there exist other scenarios and circumstances.

Albeit the man has indeed clearly stated that he is an atheist, it is a stretch to suggest that he killed these people because of his atheism.

Depending on what sort of bind your ass is in, that might not be true. Fighters in a war would be the first to come to mind, where your idea is no longer valid, and I can think of at least several other situations where this idea would also not hold true.

(help?)

Seems that Cory is much quicker off the mark than I am. I will attribute that to his young age. :O)

I agree, shooting them over a parking spot is clearly the reason.

Oh come on, no religion is exempt from A-holes. You can't blame atheism for this killing.

You tell me.

If, after over 50 years that I can remember, God has never lied to me, has always acted in my best interest (regardless of what I wanted), and has always initiated re-establishing a relationship with me even after I behaved like His enemy - AND He has always been congruent with the God revealed in the Bible (both Old (Jewish) and New (Christian) Testaments) and as taught about by Christians - what am I supposed to conclude?

I understand that you believe all of that to be true, but that doesn't make it factual.

Not only that, but in order for your statements to be true, I would need something more than your say-so if I were to accept them as fact.

Certainly as an intelligent, thinking man, you understand that would be an irresponsible way to arrive at a conclusion.

if we wan to say that someone kills in the name of god, than its only fair to call out when an atheist kills a theist for their beliefs (aka in the name of atheism).

If you can find such a case then we'll reconsider ...

Well, the previously mentioned guy sorta did, but here's the problem:

You have a case here where a person believes more than ONE thing.

First, he did 'believe' in atheism. (absolutely wonky concept there, the belief in disbelief is a strange sort of thing to call religion, but whatever)

Second, and this is the crucial one, he believed in anti-Islamic rhetoric.

(more beliefs here, unknown to me)

..

Now - surely you won't disagree that the cause was not belief #1.

True, but in the present case there is no indication whatsoever that his "atheism" was the catalyst that caused him to kill these people.

There is a difference.

There is a case to be made for the automobile being the embodiment of a state religion in the US -- I suppose desecration "misuse" of the altar parking space might qualify as a religiously-based motivation.

People snap over the weirdest stuff. Many, many years ago my husband was attacked with an aluminum baseball bat to the head over a parking space. Totally unprovoked, it was our first apartment together and there were more apartments than parking spaces, so it was basically first come first served. If he had turned his head to the left he would have been dead. Instead he ended up with about 30 stitches and the attacker ended up in jail. We never did find out what religion he was. :D
