Love thus genre. For inspiration, Google the Thief video game series. Or the book,"the lies of locke lamora"

The series of Locke Lamora is one of my all time favorites. Incredibly funny, witty and intellectual for a book in this drama. Just brilliant!

I stumbled upon it after exhausting all Neil Gaiman works, stumbling through other series and various authors, peter cline, China Meiville, etc. while on the topic, any suggestions in the vein of Gentleman bastards?

Opportune timing.

I'll have some photoshop 'learnificating' to do, though.

oh c'mon... can we just give the ribbon to gyaban and move on! jk;-)

i think this is going to be fun, but i wish we had like 2 weeks entry deadline to allow for fabrication.

p.s. anyone know of any other tutorials to make these fluorishes digitally and stay within the DPC rules?

here's one steampunk tutorials but it is heavy on making fonts

Are we allowed to use brushes in Expert to create an object?

yes, as long as the brushes aren't premade "clip-art", i believe

Thanks - So a set of brushes I buy would be acceptable?

not necessarily. if the brushes are an "image" of something distinct, then they might not be. SC will have to clarify this for you, don't know the intricacies of how the clip-art rule works.

Gotcha - Thanks. I don't normally try the Expert challenges but I thought I would give this one a try. Just trying to stay legit ;-)

Brushes with a certain shape are allowed only if you created them from photos you have taken

It kind of has no peers. Maybe Robin Hobb. It's more fantastical, but also has equal dry humor.

While that may hold generally, I am not sure it is an absolute. I think expert allows you to make an image from scratch, which is not a photo, and which could then be used as a brush. I've made things from scratch in a program similar to Illustrator, then used it as an element in an Expert challenge. But you cannot just pull an existing clip art or photo from the web and use it as a brush or anything else. And the rule on textures was loosened, too.

Maybe SC can clarify (again)?

That's true too. This is one of the dark areas of expert rules... or I'd say grey areas.

May I suggest implementing your own design. Start at a thrift shop, then antique shops, hardware stores, and even your own basement may have items to supplement the subject matter. I don't believe Steampunk photography has to be soley about people. Close ups of objects associated with the movement, or even macro shots would be acceptable, imo, just as long as the image evokes a historical science fiction flavor. A period piece. 1880-1910? Somewhere around that time I would think.
