I still haven't moved on this. The comments about Fuji lens quality (and examples) are what tempts me, but when I look at it as a system, I back off. The X-M1 has no EVF. The X-E2 is pricey without a tilting viewfinder. And the XT-1...well, it looks beautiful, but it's pricey, and although I think the XT-1 would be fantastic for me...I love shooting with a good EVF and I like the idea of a smaller camera and not worrying about high ISO. What holds me back is what is touted as the key feature of the camera...the dials. I don't like locking dials, even on my Nikons. What a pain. And to have to use the dials on top of the camera when you have the camera up to your eye? I don't see how that will be better than using the thumbwheel at the back. But as I understand it, you have to use the dials on the top for ISO and Shutter speed, right?

The dials are a bit of a pain sometimes, true. The difficulty for my use stems from the way the dial shutter speed ends at a quarter second, longer than that you use the wheel or buttons. So sometimes you'll be turning the wheel trying to get a faster speed but you need to move your finger up the the dial on top.

I am having lots of fun with my xt1. I love the dials, I have never played so much with ISO. My only struggle is with multi-point focus. There is only a center box present with multipoint focus so I feel confused about what will be in focus. My nikon had lots of squares light up - that made my brain more comfortable.

The 23mm lens is just beautiful. And the whole tiny package, I just love it.

My Fuji XT1 arrived in the mail today. The viewfinder is absolutely amazing. I'm in love with this thing. The 56 f1.2 fits it like a glove.

I picked up one of the extension tubes today for my XT1. (Haven't tried it out yet, but I wanted to be able to focus a little bit closer with the 56 mm - I am anxiously awaiting to hear what the specs will be for the 90mm macro).

Well, I am wondering if I'm nuts. But the last days of the discounts, and the notion of a lighter kit for my travels, made me press the button.

Bought the 10-24 and the XT-1 + 18-135. The lens is back down to $799 and the camera $1699 with lens!

Perhaps then I can travel with just that. We have a multisport trip (bike, hike, kayak) planned for this summer. I like the FZ1000 for travel, but it doesn't have anything wider than 25, and the low light pics are not good enough for resale.

The Fuji X-T1 covers all my needs for Colour. I have 2 decent zooms for it and of cause the Leica M adapter, really nice in manual focus mode with the split screen focus.

Mine came yesterday...not sure how to check what firmware is on it. But I think it's old because I could not tweak the focus manually after autofocusing. I also want to switch AE-L and AF-L. I saw in some of the updates you can do that now.

It's a heavy sucker for its size, especially with the 18-135 lens. Weighs as much as my FZ1000 with the (built in) 25-400mm F2.8-4.0 lens. But it's still lighter than my Nikons. Though I think I'll need to add a better grip...not sure how much weight that will add. I weighed my kit with the two lenses against my D7100 with similar two lenses (10-20 sigma and 18-200 Nikon), and it's about 1 lb lighter (than the Nikon).

I wish more companies would do AF-L and the AF mode switch like the FZ1000s. That's just perfect IMHO.

I took a few test shots with each lens (I bought the 10-24 too) last night, just around the house. Noise looks favorable--similar I'd say pretty close to the D600, though since I think Fuji exaggerates the ISO, it's probably a stop off. Should be better than the D7100 I expect.

I'll have to do more testing next week, I have a busy weekend. Not taking it out much too because I want the option to return it should it not work out for me.

I have a lot more to learn about it before I can really judge it.

ETA: I was happy to see I have the clicky buttons. They're acceptable -- I was worried given the discussions about it.

I think you'll love it. Despite owning the RX1, I still miss that little Fuji sometimes - great camera.

Kind of disappointed that the new firmware is only for the X-T1. Oh well.

Joined the X crowd.
Budget only allowed for the X-M1 with kit lens (16-50). But I'm extremely happy. Should be here on Wednesday.

Here is my initial review of the XT-1, in order of importance to me.

My goal for the XT-1 was as a lightweight travel camera capable of excellent landscapes, architecture, street shots, and indoor architecture. I bought the Panny FZ1000 last summer to see if it met that goal, and also as a less expensive camera (than an ILC) for my bike bag as I biked Nova Scotia last year, and this year, we will be biking the Canadian Rockies. The FZ1000 is a great camera, but starts to lose it's fantastic IQ as ISO goes up. Worse, it does not allow me to go wider than 25mm, and I'm more into wide than telephoto in my shooting style. The D7100 is just a bit to heavy and clunky as a travel camera...though it's close. I'll be comparing it to those.

1) Image Quality. IQ is great as many people has said. I do see some of the limitations of only having 16mp, but for most of my photography, it's probably fine. I love the way the photos look after applying one of the film profiles, which you can do in LR. It makes it quick and easy to get a nice image. "A" I think the IQ is better than the FZ1000 and D7100 especially at higher ISO. Both the FZ1000 and D7100 win on resolution though, if you need to crop or print very large.

2) Dynamic Range. This is something I worried about...the Nikons have such great DR, I thought I might be unhappy. I find the DR very good, especially on the dark side. I took test backlit shots of the Nott Memorial, which I do with most my cameras, and it performed very well in LR when bringing up the underexposed building. Unlike the Sony A6000, I didn't see false colors in the areas where I brought it up from darkness. "A". The FZ1000 does very well with this, but there is a fair amount of noise in dark areas when you brighten them.

However, I am seeing a bit of a problem on the light side with clipping. In a scene with a large DR, I really had trouble keeping the exposure down but not black, and yet not clipping some highlights. I've not run into this with any larger sensor camera I've tried. I don't even think I've had a problem with this with my 1" sensor cameras. This is perhaps still my biggest worry about the camera. I'd hate to have to always Expose to the Left. "B".

3) Both lenses (the 10-24 and the 18-135) performed very well and had lots of great microcontrast (yea!). I wish the 18-135 was 18-200 though, like my Nikon 18-200. I still think it's weird that a camera that prides itself on having external controls so you don't have to use menus or even look at the screen to set the settings includes lenses in the lineup without markings for F stops. The 10-24 is a great size and weight. The 18-135 is a bit heavy...subjectively, I think it's as heavy as my 18-200. If I have to trade focal length range for size, why couldn't it be F4 constant aperture. OIS works really great on both lenses. "A" for the 10-24, "B" for the 18-135. Both lenses better than my Nikon travel kit (10-20 Sigma and 18-200 Nikon). Though both those lenses are pretty good too.

4) Bracketing. I knew it was limited to +-1 stop for bracketing. So I am not counting this against it...even though it's stupid. Also if you want to manually bracket, it's going to be a bit hard to do so without moving the camera at all, since the controls are all pretty stiff except F-Stop. And to top it all, the 3 shot bracketing speed is very very slow compared to cameras like the RX100 and the FZ1000, which machine gun these exposures and make it even possible to do so handheld. "D"

5) Focus. This is what the XT-1 is supposed to excel at. I'd say focus speed was just acceptable. The FZ1000, a $850 superzoom with DFD focus, blows it away, as does just about any SLR. I have already though run into occasions where it just won't focus on something...whereas the FZ1000 more rarely hits that, and of course, SLRs don't have problemns. "B or B-"

6) Controls. I suspected I wouldn't like the manual controls compared to just using twin wheels like my Nikon, and I was right. The Aperture control is fine. Shutter speed is a pain, and ISO is a real pain. I also don't like the focus switch in the front...the FZ1000 has it right putting it right around the back button focus lock, where the same finger that sets back button focus also can switch between M, C, and S. But my fear about the hard to feel buttons in the back was perhaps unfounded...I seem to have one of the clicky ones. Probably impossible with gloves on though (although cameras are pretty hard to use with gloves on anyway). I also wanted to change the function of some of the buttons but I found my options limited there, such that I couldn't move the ones I wanted. I do think the latest firmware update might be more flexible there, though. I didn't apply the latest 3.0 firmware yet. "B-"

7) EVF. Actually, this should have been higher up. I find the much touted EVF not as good as expected. I thought the dual display would be the bees knees. It's a good EVF, but I prefer the FZ1000s. Also, I can't see the ISO being used until I half press the shutter. And when I do that, I lose the histogram. I do really like that it shows me the distance, and that it flips when I turn the camera. "B+"

8) Lens system. I really like OIS and I am disappointed most of the lenses in their system don't have it. That's actually fine if they would put stabilization in teh camera--the lenses will be smaller, unlike Sony, who obviously can't decide where to put it. Seems to me for a mirrorless camera, sensor based is better, making lenses smaller and less expensive. "A-"

In short, given I like the camera "pretty much", and that I just got another $200 off when it went on sale below what I paid for it 2 weeks ago, I'm beginning to think I will keep it. I do think I'd like the controls of the Oly EM-1 better. And I loved my RX-100, so the A7 series, now with IS, still tempts me. But when I bought this, part of the decision was if I really wanted to stay light and portable, I should not go full frame. Well, given my camera buying history, I'm sure I'll reevaluate in another year. But maybe by then, I'll be totally hooked on the X system.

On a processing note, LR seems to do pretty well with the RAFs now! I tried the acclaimed "Irridient developer", and perhaps it did a little better job, but I like having the file browser built in, and of course, most of the time, I'm on the PC not the Mac.

Travel Weight:
Fuji XT-1, 10-24 F4 OIS, 18-135mm 3.5-5.6 OIS -> 3 lbs, 1.2 oz
Nikon D7100, 10-20 Sigma 3.5-5.6 (no VR), 18-200 3.5-5.6 VR: 4 lbs, 6.8 oz
FZ1000, 25-400mm F2.8-F4 IS, 1 lb 15.6 oz

I'll post some comparison/test shots later!

What do you guys think about the Metabones adapters? I am just talking about the Nikon G to Fuji camera one...

Is it worth $139? There are cheaper adapters but they look like they have less control over aperature, Also, a lot of people reporting with the various cheaper ones their lens getting stuck on the adapter. I admit I've used a Fotodiox one on my M43 camera with my Nikon 10.5mm and 50mm. But I'd hate to get an expensive lens stuck!

I wish they allowed for electronic coupling too for that price. Perhaps they're working on that?

Anyone using one?

Part of my challenge to myself this year, was limiting lenses. (And it's killing me sometimes - I've had to go back to my Nikon to shoot a few close-up/macro type shots.)

But no adapters for me yet. But I do absolutely love the knobs and wheels on the Fuji so someday might move to Fuji body only with Nikon lenses, so I would also be interested in anyone's take on adapters...
