What to do about pesky moisture in the air? In my FS, it was noted that the sky is blotchy. And it is. It's because there are lots of little moisture bits here and there due to the ocean being there and all. At least that's what I think it is. I think it also gets exaggerated and exacerbated by the long exposure, the presence of artificial light, the small aperture, and possibly the lens.

So what to do about it? Thoughts?

(Note, I'm not asking about the score. It is what it is and what I deserve, since that's what I got. But as a mini-rant, how is it we only had half the amount of votes than entries, hmmmm? I mean, I know everyone is busy with the holidays and such, but come on - if you enter, you should take the time to vote. Really. It's the courteous and even seasonal thing to do.)

You are correct and I am one of the offenders who entered a free study photo but didn't manage to vote on a single entry. For the first time I had photos in 3 challenges at once: Concrete, Happy Animals and the Nov Free Study. I voted on 100% and commented on 75%+ for both concrete and happy animal and just ran out of time and energy to start on the 160+ entries for the free study. I agree with you that if one enters a challenge you should at least vote 100% of the entries in the challenge. I will probably not try to do concurrent challenges again.... just too hard to manage.

I think your photo is interesting because of the halo effect from those bits of moist air. Otherwise it would have been not as interesting. Unless you have some magical properties, I don't think there is much to be done about it. It either works for you (and the viewer) or it doesn't. Not everyone will "get" it or like it.

Thanks for the feedback! (And yes, I like the effect. I've had that happen in several photos around here, especially at night.)

And yes, tough to vote sometimes. I voted four of the recent challenges, with entries in two of 'em. I do thank you for your votes and comments! Sounds like you're doing your part.

I gave both your Concrete shot and this shot a 6.

I voted 100% in each of those challenges, but didn't enter either of them.

I think we all just do what we have time to do... and I'm okay with that.

I didn't have time to enter for either challenge. I'm not really okay with that, but I did other good stuff. :D

I like the colors in this image. The sky doesn't bother me at all. I just wanted ... a bit... more. I wanted more to draw me in. Like maybe a child as the focal point... happy to have her tree... or a dog... wandering lost... or... or... or.

I vote 100% on challenges I enter, and rarely even look at challenges I don't enter. Not as a policy; that's just how it works out.

I gave this a moderate number. By which I actually mean a crap score. Not your lowest though.

I thought the picture was dozy. No real charm or wit. Which is ironic because I am a regular admirer of your stuff for its characteristic wit and charm, and you know it. I would never have guessed you as the author of this picture.

I'm somehow confident that you did not feel your customary click when you took this picture.

I gave it a 7, I thought it was pretty nice despite the blotches in the sky.

I'm happy with it, Paul. It's such a wonderful place to hang out for a bit in the evenings, and no one notices me, not even with the big honkin' Robert-made-me-buy-it tripod. I wait for people to walk by because I like the ghosties. Were I got get a girl or a dog near a tree, they'd have to be quite still - exposures were kinda longish.

I just don't know if there's anything to be done about the reflection/refraction issue, were I to wish to do so. This is another shot with the same issue, though taken several miles from the pier...

I suspect road dirt in addition to water droplets in that one. That, and I processed the crap out of it (there's the charm!) which definitely draws out the irregularities in the air.

I just notice that other ocean shooters don't seem to get this sort of thing. Not sure why.

Thanks for the feedback - much appreciated!!

Do you shoot with a hood? I have found that sometimes helps with some of the moisture, but obviously not always.

I would've wanted the ghost-people to have a little bit more than blur, a head, a hand, to hold my attention. For what it's worth, I liked the halos around the lights. I always enjoy your work & look forward to searching for it while voting.

I do have a lens hood somewhere... just not sure where... heh! I think I'll go back sometime later this week and reshoot and try a few things differently. Shorter exposure (higher ISO, obviously) to get better defined body parts, maybe even a whole body or two, but still long enough to get motion. I'm wondering if a larger aperture might also reign in the little moisture bits, so I may try that as well.

Good feedback!

Deb, I'm a big fan of you photos, but I'd have to agree that while all the elements are pretty, there's no real focal point. That big runway of concrete is ideally positioned to show something off, but the barely there blurs ain't it.

What it needs, quite obviously, is a bike. :-)
