I did a search but did not find any threads for the topic of anyone having issues with image quality when Photoshop CC 2014 saves an image for the web, and the image quality decreases dramatically in that JPEG image. I just upgraded my 5 year old iMac to the new 5k 27" model, which is freaking amazing, but I can't get PS to save a JPEG that looks worth a hoot. All my settings are the same as my old computer, anyone have any suggestions I might try? My color spaces are the same, made sure of that. I can't seem to put my finger on this issue.

Command,Shift,4 all at once. That creates a starting point then just expand to include all that you want to have screen shot of.

CMD-Shift-3 used to do it (I'm not sure with the current OS); using a 4 instead lets you select part of the screen.

Back tot he original problem, make sure you are viewing at 100% scale or some "even" faction or multiple (50%, 25%, 200%, etc.) if you are viewing at a "fit to window" scale you will probably lose detail.

Thanks! I just now learned that from a google search.

Here is my dialog box.

Here is the 1200x800 JPEG. There is a pretty big difference between this and the original TIFF file. There really is a lot of detail being lost when I either reduce the size of when I save for the web, or both. I still have PS CS5 on my old computer and it is doing a better job than PS CC.

Well, that says you're saving at the maximum quality possible, so it's either the image, a display artifact as I mentioned, or unavoidable compression artifacts ... or maybe just looking at it on a different monitor than what you've becomme accustomed-to ...

Have you tried going to edit>convert to profile, and converting to sRGB before you save it?

It seems to do a better job of converting the colors, since the camera profile is usually adobe RGB or something else, and when you save for web it converts to sGRB but seems to screw up the colors if you haven't converted it manually first.

The colors seem to be ok thru the conversion. It's the loss of detail that is bothering me. I don't think its the new monitor because I have opened a number of other images from DPC and my own from the past and those all seem to be fine. There is huge increase in resolution between the new 5k and my 5 year old machine, but I can see almost all the same detail in the image between the full size the reduced size on my old machine. Even though the resolution is much lower, I still see all the detail. It seems that I don't have something set right on my new machine somewhere. I'll keep working with it and maybe I'll find something. Thanks all the feedback on this issue.

Maybe the scaling, whether in your display settings or in the DPC display script, is scaling up the image - with the very high-resolution display, 1200px should be very small, so if it takes up most of the browser window it's being scaled up.

Does it look the same size in photoshop at 100% after being resized and in the browser window?

Also, if you just do Save and not Save for Web, same issue?

PS - I'm not gonna lie, I'm jealous - I'd love to have that new 27" model, but I have too many computers and too few dollars.

I've always used Bicubic Sharper instead of Bicubic on reductions in size. Even so, even after producing the reduced size JPEG I find it necessary to further adjust and properly sharpen the new image.

Am I understanding that you're comparing SFW on CS6 to SFW on Photoshop Cloud?
And one is installed on the older computer and one is on the new computer?

My original iMac is 5 years old, and it's a 24" model which I was using PS CC but have since uninstalled it, it still has CS5 installed on it too. My new iMac is the 27" Retina 5K display and I'm now using PS CC 2014 since I had to download the newest version from Adobe. I am seeing a vast decrease in image quality on the new machine when I save for the web. The resulting JPEG at 1200 pix looks terrible at any setting I am using. Colors seem to me be fine. It's losing a ton of resolution during the conversion to JPEG for some reason. I never sharpen after I resize an image. When I do sharpen the full size image, I use a special action set that came to me as part of a photogrpahy workshop a few years ago. It's a complicated sharpening process made much easier by a person who just wrote an action for it. But, even when I sharpen it, it is not helping much.

I think a part of this issue might be the new screen, it has incredible resolution, contrast, and details. I have both machines set up side by side while I am transferring data, and it's almost hard to look at the old one anymore, it sort of hurts my eyes. But, on the old screen, I still see the same details in the full size version and the 1200 pix version.

I think MadMan2kmay have hit on part of the answer with the scaling. I will check that out when I get home tonight.

As far as the new iMac is concerned, it seems to be a very fine machine. The screen at least is a huge step up from what I bought 5 years ago.

I have just spent about 30 minutes making sure I was not seeing things.

SO, what I have found: this screen is acting very strange. When I view images online, any images from any website so far, if I click and hold the edge of the window and then resize the window a tad either larger or smaller, the image becomes sharper and with more clarity. Then when I release the mouse, the image becomes more blurred and with less details. Is that strange or is there something going on with this display? I have changed the settings on the display and none seem to make any difference. Anyone else out there with this new 5k screen experiencing the same thing?

Wait, this is the 5k 27" model? You are wearing your 3D glasses, right?

Well I'm stumped then. That was my only suggestion.

In all honesty I encountered a similar problem when I upgraded monitors a couple years ago but can't at the moment remember how I got it sorted. Will try...

THAT sounds like maybe a browser setting, possibly making the window as large as it thinks will fit, giving you an "uneven" enlargement error as I mentioned earlier.

I just pulled up DPC on my wife's laptop with retina display (13 inch).

With the display scaling on the default setting (best for this screen), it wants to scale the 1200px image I have entered in the Jewelry challenge up to fill the whole width of the browser window, which is quite a lot of scaling, pixel-for-pixel, and loses a hell of a lot of detail. I'm sure it gets even worse on a 5k display.

When I set it to "scaled", and then drag the slider to the right (more space, emulates a 1680px wide display), the photo is more along the lines of the size it should be. Maybe that setting would work for you; still doesn't seem to be displaying at 100% of the actual JPG size which is always going to look the best, but maybe good enough for viewing?

I think it's an issue with the way Safari behaves on a retina display computer - I would recommend trying another browser like Chrome or Firefox, which might have more advanced scaling settings even if the defaults are to act the same way.

The pre-retina mac computers have a normal resolution setup, so when you select "scaled" the images stay at their real pixel size (an 800px high images takes up two thirds of the height of my 1920x1200 display, but when I set it to 1200x800 it takes up the whole height and everything looks like crap).

I think my issue has been resolved for the moment, I installed Chrome tonight and I am very happy with what I am seeing so far. Chrome is acting normal as far as image quality. All images are incredible and rich in color and details. I think Safari has the issue here, which is just crazy! Safari should be performing without any issues, but maybe Apple has some things to work out with it. I'll go to the local Apple store this weekend and see what they have to say about it. Thanks to all who responded to this issue, appreciate it very much.

I have used chrome on my MAC from the beginning.. never any issues.... images look great. Keep us posted with what you find out.
