Seeds for thought.
Some lovely photo essays about place, The States Project on Lenscratch. I found this recently posted essay Will Jacks particularly interesting.
Happy Holidays!

Thanks Henry. That's quite a site.
By the way, remember all JANUARY 15 for posting first essays (collection) of 2017.
No need to worry about text.
Happy Holidays to all! |

Not sure I'll have anything. Some works in progress that might be recoverable. I'll comment either way. |

I believe it's more of a begin posting date. Tardy is fine with this group. Would love to see some of your work. |

I just noticed that if you post later than the deadline people do not look as much. But feel free Mita to post anytime. I look forward to see more people participating but I think that the word "essay" intimidate some.I'll post a collection with no words, again. It's a collection of pics on a theme. |

People of all nations,
Tomorrow is the day of posting. Or let's say the beginning of posting the photo essays.
I myself will be a few days late due to an unexpected and ungracious flu
I'll post toward midnight the link.
Do participate please.

So looking at a couple of essays has made me curious.
How many people simply pull their photos together and make an essay. How many people go out with an essay in mind and shoot?
In looking at my photos, I feel like pulling the photos together would end up making a less interesting essay and I might see more if I pick a topic before going out.
But then part of me thinks it might be rather limiting.
But perhaps a better collection because of it.
Just curious if you've tried both ways and what you've found. |

I haven't posted mine yet - hopefully tomorrow, but it was shot specifically with the idea of putting it together as a group of images. However, mine's more of a documentary than an essay.
But the essays I've done earlier have all been shot specifically with the intention of grouping them together.

I have done about half and half. Half being shot with the essay in mind and half came together when I was looking through my camera roll and realized some of the shots would go well together. I think it is a valuable exercise and I'm sorry to say I didn't get one done for this month. The essays that are posted so far this month are inspirational and I'm planning to get started early for the next essay. |

I usually have something in mind but my end result isn't clear. Once I get 5 or 6 images that work together then I start to find more direction. To complete the essay I need to get out and take more pictures or dig through archives. It really depends on what I'm trying to say. Many of my efforts fizzle and are just collections of images. Although I like the images, I just couldn't make anything interesting happen. They become a pools of potential images for future essays. |

Anybody working on a photo essay? March 15 will be 2 months since our last posting. Should we postpone a few weeks or stay with the current schedule? |

Just posted my "essay" which is actually more of a random potpourri of some lame pictures taken at an event.
I'm going to appreciate every comment whatsoever - even harsh critique - so don't hestitae to share your thoughts about it. Thank you!

Any interest in putting together some photo essays? We haven’t gone through this exercise in a while. Post around December 1st?

Thanks Henry for reminding me. I'll show something then. Have to think about what the theme could be.
I think this is a very good exercise to evaluate pictures, especially your own... |
