Joan Crawford by Hurrell as retouched by James Sharp circa 1931

A fine example of a technique I didn't know about (the vibrating machine). But I think it is important to remember that when the Knoll brothers wrote Photoshop they didn't "invent" any techniques (well, maybe the later distortion filters) but rather wrote digital imitations of established methods.

And she didn't need retouching at all. But it's the early Hollywood era that perfected the fake plastic look that everyone has come to know and expect and demand in the modern age. It's made a lot of people and companies lots of money over the decades and what use to be a skill can now be done by just about anyone with the money to buy the software. Such is progress.

Gosh look at the frizz at the ends of her hair!

Well, her hair is completely ruined due to all the gawdawful primitive chemicals they used in hair back then to either straighten or curl or wave, not to mention the hard-ass curling irons etc.

Notice the extent to which they had to correct the *smoker's face* naso-labial lines that she already has, and she's only what, in her early 30s or so? The neck lines are natural, as are sadly those grotesquely overplucked eyebrows...*shudder*...

Please Mommy Dearest, no more wire hangers!!!!

A bump for GeorgesBogaert.

I had started to post when this first came up. It's interesting that people constantly bring up these most extreme examples of traditional photo retouching in the context of Photoshop -- like there's a need to defend or validate it. Image manipulation is as old as image making.

this is disgusting and I'm appalled at this type of manipulation.

That's nothing compared to what Jerry Uelsmann was doing in the darkroom

Sometimes I think it is a shame that we feel the need to remove bits of 'character' in images.
I feel like these are two very different images where the retouched image says "hope" as opposed to the original that has more of a "misery" feel. So given that - nice job on the retouch ;)

Eyebrows were to Crawford what fangs were to Dracula...

ugh, these fantastical creations are ruining photography. why cant these people learn to get it right in camera? hopefully someday a powerful editing software comes along so we can finally apply a name to this bastardization of photography.

It's pretty clear that all of these fanciful images started life as images that were gotten right in camera.
