So I have my sitting fee, I have my print prices. I did shoot for a family. Their son was the band leader of a high school marching band. I shot 2 quarters of the football game, and the half time show. She's going to order prints.

However, she's wondering if we can work out a digital price for some of her favorite shots. One to include in the yearbook, and I assume a couple of others to share on social media.

Any idea on how to price these individual files? I've often wondered this. It's fun to share the files, but in some cases it will take away from the prints that would be ordered. But in other cases, it may just add additional money. So I really have no idea how to price this.

She doesn't want to buy the whole CD of digital files, just some individuals. I could give the option of buying the CD instead of prints, but I adjust the brightness, sharpening, etc for printing, so I'm not sure I want anyone else printing my photos. The quality control wouldn't be there.

Thoughts? I appreciate it. Thanks!

From a racing/sport events perspective it's not uncommon for full resolution digital files to go for $10 - $20 per JPEG from Photog to Photog...
Usually over a certain amount of shots requested there is a package price so that 10 jpegs isn't $100, IE: If you order all the digital shots of you from today it's a $65 CD... etc...

I often times barter advertisement, IE: If they want a couple free web-res shots that they really like, they agree to keep the watermark in the shot, and when posting to social media please link my FaceBook - this works out really well, since a lot of times folks just want shots for their social media pages, the rest I will sell a CD of logo free hi-res shots to.

just sell her the cd of images.

give her high-res and also lower res watermarked images for social media sharing.

sell the cd for what you think is a fair price and ask her to use the watermarked images for social media to help promote you.

if they dont want all the images just sell the digital files for what you think you'd make for prints and let them worry about printing, quality control isn't your problem.

Wendy, I've done all of the work for you. ;) Here's how I manage pricing for prints and digital files. Feel free to copy it as is or alter it to what you would like to charge.

I have created the option for three types of image purchase options:

1) Prints in various sizes and packages
2) Digital downloads for clients to print themselves or use elsewhere other than commercial (like the yearbook you mentioned)
3) Digital downloads for use on social media that are sized so that they wouldn't print well if they tried.

The point is that I offer prints and digital downloads to my clients and they can choose which images that want printed, which digital files they want for social media, and which digital files they want for printing and use elsewhere. While it may not be a perfect canned solution for every combination of wants and needs by my clients, it works very well for most of them. For those who contact me and ask for a custom package such as the same image printed and as a digital file for social media I will give them a break so that they don't pay full price for two versions of the same image. At some point I will take the time to create a product that is an upsell of a digital download for social media use (small, 72 dpi file) when they purchase the print.
