Need help with the following.

Creating SMOOTH dvd's from iMovie (just want it to play like I see it on iMovie)
Removing the black blocky patches from movies uploaded to Vimeo or exported with Quicktime to a computer file.

I am using and EM5 to shoot and iMovie to edit

Here is a copy of video I just edited. It plays fine in iMovie but the blacks get ruined when exported out through Quicktime as a file or when uploading to Vimeo directly from iMovie also.

Vimeo movie

Is this a problem with the codec of the EM5?
Would I see the same thing with a Panasonic GH3 (known for amazing video)?
How do I fix this problem?

Please help as I have tried google and cannot find anything.

If you go to 1.00 in the video and look at the ladies dark hair (the one putting on the makeup) do you see that the blacks have gone blocky and have no details.
Now rewatch the video looking at the blacks.
Do you see this on your computer?

I noticed the black blocks you mentioned when viewing on my Samsung plasma TV. I can't help much with suggestions, and it seems this site is dead right now. Does it only happen on Vimeo? I don't do much at all with video, but maybe export it at a higher quality if possible, it kinda looks like the jpg artifacts you get if you compress it too much. And probably unrelated, but Vimeo, at least in my experience as a person watching videos, is horrible. I have a pretty decent PC, and while the quality looks nice at Vimeo, I get playback issues, stutters and the sorts that I never get at YouTube for example. (Not specifically the video you posted, I only cut to the minute mark to look for the artifacting).

Yes, I do see that. I was concentrating on the customer, and hadn't really paid attention to the staff member.

How odd..... at 1:06 and 1:07 both dark haired ladies are about the same distance from the camera, and have very similar hair colour, yet only one shows the blocks.

I see it, but I have no solution, sorry.

First of all, if video is not what you do for a living, congrats, well shot and well edited.

The original footage has some traces of that problem? That problem is weird in some way since the rest of the video is perfect. Which codec have you used to export the video an which settings?

I'd say that there's nothing wrong with your camera, the overall quality is pretty good.

OMG thank you Alex so much. This is my third video ever!!
My last one was a wedding for my niece which can be found on my vimeo site.
My first one was a funeral (scattering of ashes) which they loved for a keepsake

Learned from the wedding not to trust auto focus.
Learned from the Cozmedics shoot not to work with auto white balance
Starting to get a handle on it all.
Happy with how I edit and shoot but now have to learn all about codecs and burning DVD and unlike photography there isn't as much available on the net to help with video
There are forums but they are not as active as photography forums.

If I play the edited footage in iMovie the blacks are fine. That's what has me so puzzled as to what is going wrong.
Whether I upload to vimeo with SHARE VIMEO on iMovie or export in Quicktime either as HD720 or HD1080 they all have blocky blacks and dark colours. Soooooo annoying!!

I'm wondering if the problem with the blacks is due to the poor codec on the EM5 and that after compression it falls apart but I really have no idea.
Hoping there might be someone one here that does both video and stills and knows about these things and can help me out.

Thanks to everyone that helps with this, it really is greatly appreciated.

I do both videos and photos for a living.

Not easy to say why you have those dark areas. You should try to use another encoding software only with that specific original sequence and see what happens. You could send it me (the original one), but you have 30 minutes, then I'll be away for 2-3 and not able to download it.

ETA: my name is not Paul :)

Paul? Lol

Oppps edits your name. Don't know where I got Paul from.

What do you mean by 'another encoding software?
Do you mean FCPX?
What do you use?

Do I just send an original short clip? One with a lot of blacks?
I used the best video setting on the camera when shooting.

I am happy to purchase FCPX if it will fix the problems or do I need another camera with better codes.
Sheesh….all this makes my head hurt.

Even though they are small clips the files are too large (105mb) how do I send them?

Also, sent you an email but accidentally pushed sent when pushing buttons at the top to sort out how to send it.
Sheeeesh.

Happy to wait till you return. Really appreciate your help.

I use all the adobe CC suite, so Premiere CC and its media encoder. IMO Adobe improved it sooo much and a lot of FC users are now using it.

Send me the original clip that after encoding has problems. I can try to to encode it in Premiere/Media encoder and see if it still has problems. But remember, I'll be away in 20 minutes :)
