I posted the Parched photo in the texture challenge, this photo is of GREY river clay, a natural substance that the indians used to make pottery with. This photo is in full color, not B&W. I just wanted to get this on record due to the number of comments about it being b&w. I tried to grey scale it, and it wasn't what I was wanting, so I left it as is. Thanks for the comments.

We have gone over the discussion all week that you should not reveal your photo till the end of the voting process. It sometimes encourages the voters to go back and have a better look. Not really fair to all the rest.

Hey TomNTexas, we all have the same frustrations of having our photos being misunderstood. Part of the ?challenge? of DPChallenge is being able to communicate only through a photograph.

sorry, i'm new here, but its frustrating to see comments on the pic and have someone score it low because they think its a b&w... I also don't think it right or fair to let someone vote, when they've never submitted a pic to begin with....kinda like someone telling the chef his steak tastes like leather, when they don't eat meat.....sorry, i won't say anything else.

I understand your frustration TomNTexas. It can be very discouraging to get a negative comment however understand that there are an incredible amount of different views on this site. We all see things in a different way and we all have things that we like and dislike. I thought my submission for this week was one of my best works so far, however, it seems an awful lot of people disagree. Such is life.
Maybe Drew or Langdon should add a line to the rules stating that photographers should not make their pictures known, until the end of the challenge. This would maybe clear up any misunderstandings that our new friends have :-)

First of all I don't understand why anyone would score an image low because it's in Black and White, personally I think B+W can be THE most effective style for showing texture, some of the more brightly coloured images in this weeks challenge work better in Greyscale, as I've said in other places, there seems to have been confusion between what is texture and what is colour and shape. Secondly, I have taken considerable amount of time to vote on 150 images this week even though I have not submitted a photo myself. I do take time to consider each image and leave comments were I feel it appropriate especially if I see something that in my opinion (for what it's worth) could easily be changed for the better. I think this site is all about people looking for opinions on their photos whether they like them or not it's just my opinion. Should I be allowed to comment when I haven't submitted? your comparison with the chef is a little off target, I suspect that most voters do at least take photos so we can comment on the toughness of a steak without knowing how to cook a good one ourselves. I can't paint or produce fine sculpture but I can still comment on what I like/don't like at the art gallery.
Keep it up

Tom -- we've all had this frustration, trust me. And as far as telling which picture was yours, don't feel too bad. It is more of an accepted practice to remain anon than a rule. You haven't broken any rules.

Welcome to DPChallenge! I think you will find most of the people of more than fair, and will help you in any way they can.

As far as letting people who don't submit vote. That has been mentioned before, but I think it adds to the challenge. That way we are able to produce art that appeals (?) to both artist and layperson.

Have a good weekend all. I'm going to try and spend the rest of this BEAUTIFUL Saturday OFF of these forums. Pray for me. :-)

We are looking forward to hearing you in here often, This is a fun sight, but it does have it's frustrations. The general rutine here is to not disclose which photo is yours until after the challenge is over....After then, many of the pictures will be discussed in length through the following week. I'm looking forward to hearing all about your picture then. Tom, take a few min. to brows through the forum topics. In there you will hear many comments about some of the frustrations you have yet to encounter. This is a good group of people Tom, Welcome.

How is it different from letting people vote on who becomes the president of the U.S. when they are not politicians?

:)

Oh no...you had to bring politics and the U.S. into this...here come the 'I'm sick of you people thinking this site is only frequented by U.S. citizens' comments. Sheez, mag...this is the WWF...err...I mean www!

Oh, and a non-photog's opinion is just as valuable as a photog's opinion. There is something to be said for not being brain-washed with the rule of thirds, etc. The goal of a photo is to communicate with/move a viewer...not specifically a photographer.

Revised example, just for Lisa (is "Troublemaker" in your job title? :):)) ---

How is it any different from non-politicians voting for their leaders? Should we all have to be politicians or have run for office to be allowed to vote?

This site is that kind of democracy. And yes, it can be equally as frustrating :).

People who don't actively shoot can still tell you what they like. I know a lot of non-film makers go to movies, and a lot of non-musicians listen to music ... Some of those people may actually even be good people, gasp! ;)

But Tom, I definitely 'feel your pain', man. We all do. It's part of the agony and the ecstacy of DPChallenge. . .

My only frustration is not knowing where my photos rank with certain people.

If I knew a voter typically votes high for landscapes (something I don''t do that often) but doesn''t like set-up shots (which I do more of) then I could understand the vote better.

Say if I knew a voter really likes abstracts and they liked mine or didn''t like it..I could talk to that person specifically and discuss abstracts or whatever.

The anonymity here sometimes is very frustrating. In the long run I don''t know if I am after the mainstream vote so after a while I don''t know if the format here will allow me to grow.

Now, hokie, this statement does resonate with me, and is something I am struggling with as well .. I'm still waiting to see how it plays out, and I also figure that it doesnt hurt me to develop this side of my work while exploring other avenues ...

I know what you mean.

Like your models mag. Your style is very well suited for the urban city feel. Those models I talked to you about.. I will be talking with the club owner in 2 weeks.

My wife and I will be in Baltimore in 2 weeks at the Timonium Fairgrounds for a cat show. So will the club owner for those shots I mentioned to you.

I think your style will be perfect for those folks :-)

Message me and I will give you my e-mail so you can send me some hi-rez versions of your model work. I can drop those photos off with Tia when I am in Baltimore and she can pass them along to her folks.

You're a med student. Doesn't that fall into the MD category?

Hokie;
I love abstract, that fact shows up in most everything I photograph. This, I have discovered, doesn't score too well on this site. Does this mean I'll take abstract out of my vocabulary? Absolutely not, my challenge now is to do something abstract that will make the majority of the voters say WOW!! I like things a bit off center and am not necessarily married to the rule of thirds. Set up shots are my least favorite, but, I DO like a particularly well done Still (set-up). Like "Baroque" that we all watched progress in this forum. Landscapes have to be AWESOME to score well with me. Animal and kid pictures are not my favorite, but, again, I will score high on a particularly well done photo. With this information under your belt your challenge is to see if you can tell which picture I submit for the Corporate World challenge.
I wonder if this type information should go in a users profile...........??? Any thoughts???
