I would recommend hitting highway 1 just after crossing the Golden Gate. Muir Woods is just down the road from that turn off. Also, Point Reyes/Tomales Bay is right up the road and you will go around it on the route you have. There is a nice little place to stay on the Bay in Inverness called Motel Inverness. That is one of my favorite places on earth. Good photo ops all around.
You will drive through my hometown of Centralia. There is a good Mexican place, Casa Ramos, right off the highway. Instead of the way you are coming to I-5 you call also stay on the coast and go through some great country and the end of the Lewis and Clark trail. You can either drive up to Raymond, Wa ad cut over or go into Aberdeen and go into Olympia from there.
If you got the route you have you should take some time to see the Columbia River Gorge just east of Portland for great waterfalls. |

That should be a nice trip, but think I'd cut across Hwy 8, and visit San Diego instead of going through Riverside. I think it's a prettier route. My wife and I drive the 8 to the 10 through Tucson, and into New Mexico often. The saguaro are spectacular between Casa Blanca & Gila Bend, AZ. Southern California beaches can be hit or miss in June. We get what is referred to locally as June Gloom. As the deserts heat up, the marine layer gets sucked inland, and often the beaches are foggy. It's probably the cloudiest month of the year on this part of the Pacific coast.
We drove to Seattle a couple of years ago to catch a cruise ship to Alaska. On the way home, we came mostly along the coast, similar to your route. I was surprised (and a little disappointed) at just how crowded the roads were in Oregon. I had pictures of quaint little towns sitting along the coast in Oregon. What we got were hours of stop and go traffic...sorry for that, I hope you have a wonderful trip! |

If you do decide to go up north more make sure you stop by Pacific City in Oregon just south of Tillamook. It is a beautiful beach with a great brewpub right on the sand. There are other great spots around Tillamoook; Netarts, the cheese factory, air museum, Blue Heron French Cheese Company, Sand Lake, a lighthouse or too, and Seaside will be a great place for the kids.
I am from Washington State and live in AZ now. My wife is from Portland. We make the drive almost every year. |
