I entered the most technically difficult and challenging photo I've taken in a really long time, one of my favorite photos I've taken, and I'm getting creamed!!! I really thought I would score hi on smoke.

I think people don't see what it is, I should have used a different title.

Can I change my title now?

(ya, I know I can't)

Oh Well

It might not be much encouragement, but my favorite challenge entry (albeit, I've only entered 5) was "Travel Guide" and I ended up 1 away from the brown ribbon!

I'm still not sure exactly why it scored that low...

My current Mirror photo may be my toughest as far as lighting and set up. Overall, I believe it is a good shot, but it is not faring so well! Tomorrow, I may be saying the same thing about Sports Action!

Favorite photo, most difficult setup, and lowest score (fortunately) were all taken by other photographers. ;-)

I entered two photographs (smoke, mirrors) that I was hoping to get a score over 6. Last check they were at 5.22 and 5.03 respectively.

Somebody please pass me a tissue. :(

once this is over, I'm gonna post my photo with a new title, then ask for others to rate it again. I think it might do better.

Anyone think that a title could make or break a shot?

While some members declare that they are not affected by titles, this is not a correct observation. This is more applicable to images which are so univeral that they require no title, however, the artist, in making a particular statement needs the title because in some pieces, the title is welded to the work or it is an extension. By the same token, the wrong title can mislead the viewer. Not only that, but a title distinguishes and baptizes a creation, hence....great thought should be placed before releasing the brainchild into the wilderness.

A tricky thing taste is...

I just had this discussion with a friend today.
I really liked a certain photo that she just hated. So I asked her which of 2 pics from the same series she would prefere. She picked the one I liked less!
I am sure this would have seen in her score had she voted for those pics.

We love our pics much more then others cause we understand exactly what we photographed, good things and bad things just as well. Someone else doesn't always see that. Thus they like it less, thus the score it lower...

And I bet, out of every 3 challenges you will find at least one photographer who never thought his photograph could actually win. So it works both ways ;-)

By the way, as it was just to prove my point, I received right now 2 comments on my submittion:
What the first one thought to be real attractive in my image, the other one considered to be the main flaw. But what the other one really liked - the first one commented as a major drawback...

You see what I mean?!

I think i get the award for most unhated or unloved photo... it also ended up at 28 percentile.

Not a single 1,2,9 or 10. Now thats pleasing everyone and no one at the same time!

Go Eric! The sign of a true photographer!

LOL Eric, I am having the same experience with "Mirrors". I really like my shot, and the one comment I've gotten actually suggested it should ribbon, yet it currently is at 4.8; I'm sure this disparity is due to folks that don't see it as fitting the challenge.
My score won't change how I feel about the shot, I guess I need to figure out whether it's more important for me to be creative or to submit shots that conform to the challenge in painfully obvious ways (NOT!)

here's one comment i got...

"at first i couldn't understand what i was looking at...i looked and i looked...and when it hit me... i was like...what!!!??!...my jaw dropped!.....this is an awsome shot. well composed and extremely unique."

another said.... "(edited so i don't give it away) took me awhile to figure that one out (edited so i don't give it away)"

So I think a change of title would have helped!

Haha,

Oh Well :)

now i know for next time!

E

P.S. I thought my mirror photo was bad, but it's doing as good as Smoke!!!

I don't think I'll ever learn with the titles. I have a tendency toward titles that may take a bit of thought to interpret, but that work on at least two levels. I think this is a baaaad way to go. Maybe I'll just go for titles like "A candid shot of a <insert subject> taken in late evening [no edits]"

... or not.

Thanks Kirbic,
I'll keep that advice in mind next time I submit!
