Hey everyone...
This past weekend I did a shoot Tethered for the first time.... I had it set up to shoot into Lightroom 4. The issue i'm having is that the images are all in Lightroom now on my laptop... I want to send the RAW files (unedited) to my external hard drive to back up...... I also want to take the RAW files out of lightroom on my laptop and put them into lightroom on my iMac... how would I go about doing this? |

| Sorry, can't help you with that. Canon users have Eos Utility with live preview, zooming and other nice features and it sends the raw image to your hard disk. Isn't there a similar utility on your Nikon software disks? |

| not to sure Hajeka, I'm new to Tethered shooting.. there has to be an easier way though... I had to hook my external hard drive up, transfer the images out of lightroom onto the hard drive, then plug the hard drive into my iMac, transfer the images off there into a folder on my desktop, open the folder in lightroom to get them on that computers hard drive and into that computers version of lightroom CC.... pain in the butt. |

| I'm also frustrated by this. I did a shoot tethered, got all the hardware going, but then the process saved the images directly to the laptop, without saving a copy on the card. THAT led to all manner of problems. I tried searching if it was possible to have it do both, but have had no success. Anybody have any ideas? |

Not sure about Nikon,but I know most Canon cameras can be set up to save both to the card and to make the transfer. If you set it up that way and subsequently want to get the images onto a second machine, just remove the card and import from it.
Now, if you have files that are in Lr on one machine, and want to back them up and also get them into Lr on another machine, take the following approach:
1.) Open the folder where the images reside on the first machine
2.) Attach a removable drive to the machine
3.) Copy the images to the removable drive
4.) Connect the drive to the second machine
5.) Import into Lr on the second machine from the removable drive
The removable drive acts as both the backup and the transfer medium.
ETA:
To find the location of files in your Lr library (on a Windows machine), open Lr, go to the Library tab, right-click on a folder and select "Show in Explorer." The folder will open in a Windows Explorer window.

Thanks, Fritz. But I specifically want to be able to see my images on a laptop screen as I'm shooting. I've tried tethering via LR and it only transfers to the laptop, without leaving a copy on the camera card. This creates ALL sorts of problem in transferring them out, not to mention the possibility of lost images if the tether somehow becomes, well, "untethered".
I haven't tried saving the images onto a card in the laptop, but that still doesn't resolve the issue of having them on my camera as well. There is a program someone mentioned and I've downloaded, but so far, I haven't been able to make that work either. |

DiyPhotoBits Camera Control (Free but needs some IT skills) and for Windows XP mostly
and here's how Scott Kelby does it...
or use a WiFi capable SD card? (D300/D700 CF only so no good for them) They aren't fast but this isn't Indy 500 or the Superbowl you're shooting :) They can however also send to a smart device, not just a PC/MAC. They do however seem to be fraught with wireless reach, compatibility and a lack of user friendly interface...

Another piece of software you can try is digiCamControl. It's free software.
I have tried it once, and it worked with my D3200. There is a camera compatibility list on the site. Haven't used it in a more serious fashion.

This is the software I've downloaded, but I haven't had a chance to play with it.
Thanks, Harvey! I was just looking at the Camera Control Pro 2, but again, it doesn't say anything about being able to write to BOTH the laptop and in-camera memory card. More investigation is required.
The DIY project doesn't address the issue at all, but looks like it might be fun to try :) |

Nikon shooters shooting can not save on card, they go straight into the computer.
Yet, the only time it saves on card would be shooting videos.
All cameras save on card for videos including my Canon EOS-1D C.
But my ATG Canon EOS-1D C (modified)and ATG Sony A7sr can be saved onto card.
If you have Nikon Camera Control Pro2 (software), it CAN NOT provide large live-view because their is no icon to make it larger.
But Nikon Camera Control Pro2 is better than Adobe Lightroom because only the Shutter Button works on Adobe Lightroom.
If you have a Canon then you can save on card, card/pc or pc.
Plus getting a large screen live-view that ATG implement on Canon dslrs.
Instead of being restricted with the limited of the cable, just buy the ATG AK1 Un-Tethered Systems. Then you shoot everything wirelessly. |

The D4 apparently can do both...but at $7k+ you'd expect it to!
Try www.ghisler.com a program called Total Commander that checks and syncs directories. Perhaps not whilst shooting but once you slap an empty card into your reader you can sync back the tethered save folder to the empty card whilst you're having a coffee :)
BTW  AN1 is an internet fake product and fake e-commerce site scamster according to Lighting Rumours about the fake products "ATG".
