My philosophy as well. I typically have my iPhone and either my Canon S95 or Olympus XA for everyday use. I will pack my more expensive gear if photography is the main point of the ride.

And frankly, this isn't to say that you can't get pretty good shots with such options. Consider that I told my non-photographically inclined friend to take this shot, that his timing was just slightly off, and it's still not a bad shot (minus poor pp) considering the challenging shooting conditions (strong backlight, fast motion, high dynamic range, remote location) and honestly the result is pretty good.
