Basically photos of kids, pets, flowers, sunsets etc. If you can get a photo of a kitten smelling flowers whilst the sun sets, then you are onto a winner!

There are certain types of photos that get entered every week, regardless of what the challenge is. You will almost always see a flower, a child, someones pet, or a flag. Often it has a title of 20 or more words trying to say why this 'flower' (or whatever) meets the technology (or whatever) challenge. There has also been at least one thread per week ranting about how sick someone is of seeing pet/flower/kid/sunset/whatever photos.
I think this challenge will be great since the folks that like these shots will have a challenge they actually meet, and the folks that complain about these shots will learn they are far harder to take then they seem to believe :)

I need your help... My english is not very good, and I don´t understand what is the essence of the cliche´s challenge. Is there anybody who speaks spanish? If somebody try to explain it to me in english... I need your help!!!

Cliche's are word phrases, depending on who's defination you use they can be old proverbs, quotes, everyone knows them, they are those silly phrases Grandma used when you were little...such as...
Mind your P's and Q's.
Not worth a hill of beans.
You can't win them all.
Cute as a button.
And if you can't think of a cliche' do what I do a search and see if any cliche's pop up and inspire you...I'm still searching for one that works for me. |

It seems to me that this challenge topic should be more "Clichés in photography" or even "Clichés in DPC".
I get to this impression when reading the Challenge Details, where it reads "Pick a common photography subject, and take the best photo you can".
So you might be better off if you browes the previous challenges, look at the low rated submissions, check if they belong to some sort of cliché in the sence metioned above and shot.
A dictionary might not be of big help, because as far as I understood clichés are things like:
men can't cook
women can not drive
etc.

does anyone actually know what a cliche is ? ok the dictionary explanation was good, and technically some of those sayings were as well. but you can't take sayings and say they are cliche's you have to cliche them to make them cliche so if you win 10 billion dollars and lose it all in a casino .. that is cliche as you can't win them all .. but you had done until you lost a big one .. cliche .. because you had won them all but you all of a sudden fall into the bracket of the saying making you a cliche gambler. isn't that the way it works ?
it is going to be hard to capture that in one image, Sunset is a good one but it has to be a perfect sunset in my mind to be cliche because when do they ever happen.
In essence this photo is going to need a lot, a lot of content or none at all to make any sense in my mind. But thats where our imagination comes in. We come up with and idea, then try to take a photo that portays that idea to others.

| Does a milk drop or liquid droping count as a cliche? I'm water/milk/liquid dropped out. But maybe I'll take one though as I consider that a cliche. |

| I think this is more directed at photographic cliches. Try to recreate a tired old photographic subject - flowers, puppies, children and maybe realise that it is hard to do it well, in the process. |

definitely this challenge isnt about portraying a cliche saying as a picture.
it's about taking a tired overused much done subject and taking the best possible picture of it.
hope that clears things up.

top of the thread suggests a few others think it could be taken literally about photographing a literary cliche.
opinion is opinion, so just make a cliche how you want to.

Exactly. Dont focus so much on the title of the challenge, instead look at the description of the challenge: "... Pick a common photography subject, and take the best photo you can." This is pretty clear.

I agree that taking pics of a "cliche saying" might make for more interesting shots, but I remember when this challenge was first suggested way back when. Many people complain about dogs, flowers, kids, sunsets etc pics, yet those shots are seldom done well. So the point of the challenge was to get the people who complain to put their money where their mouth is and do the cliches WELL.
Make sense? :-D

OK GUYS! every week we have someone asking about ways to interpret the challenge... this is probably the easiest one yet, don't have ideas?! LOOK in the challenge details, here's some ideas... kids... flowers... pets... right there, easy as can be, so why does everyone have to complain all the time. Take your best photo however you interpret the challenge, who cares what you get, this site isn't about winning, and I'll bet you'll still get helpful info from someone whether your photo fits the way everyone thinks it should or not. Don't worry about what other people think, just try your hardest, and enjoy taking the photo. If in doubt READ THE CHALLENGE DETAILS! Absolutely. I think one of the challenges we all face here is : do I shoot to please myself, learning in the process; or do I shot for score, sometimes producing a photo that is not what pleases us the most.
Your "Kissed by a Rose" shot was one of those I really liked. It must have taken a lot of effort to get the lighting right, in addition to the DOF. You could have produced a literal interpretation (rose on cheek), but it would not have had the impact - or personal satisfaction of your final.
Keep up the "out of the box" interpretations if they please you. OSme of us will enjoy the results.

remembering from other discussions, most people said the title is part of the photo? so in that regard, you could do a title cliche.
take a photo of something ordinary (pen, ball, sock, etc). then write a 20+ word title trying to describe why it's cliche.

I am sure not everyone follows the discussions in this forum and also don't read the instructions properly. So I reckon we will be seeing a lot of photos next week depicting "Cliches" as a common phrase. |
