Seriously? When on every minimal challenge there are posts bemoaning how people have gone out and shot and only realised it's minimal after the fact?

Now class, everyone pick up your camera, go to the image settings menu, and change it to jpg large (or fine or whatever). If you want you can make it RAW/NEF and jpg fine/large, but remember to submit the jpg! And fill the frame, no cropping allowed!

I was one of them :)

I don't know what the Minimal ruleset hopes to accomplish except to pander to the people who don't want to bother with post-processing their work. It doesn't level the playing field. Better photographers will not be handicapped by rules. Artists will not be restrained by rules. Rules do a pretty good job at controlling what people can see on the DPC website, though. Hm. That could be it.

This is a good challenge with minimal ruleset. It will test one's skill with camera and lens, while at the same time reduce dependence on postprocessing enhancements. It's very good to have a variety of challenges and rulesets to expand our range.

Minimal
I don't mind and do think this is a particularly good challenge for the rule set. If only I could get rid of the sensor dust spot that has plagued me since I got the camera!!

Pecpads, swab and eclipse. Upon visual examination of the sensor, can you spot the spot?

Thanks. I have even had this factory cleaned because there was a different problem and I had to send it in. One stubborn spot remains. I try to shoot around it in minimal LOL

It's VERY easy to post-process in OOF blur in advanced editing. Running this under minimal editing requires photographers to get up-close and personal with their gear, always a good thing in moderation.

OMG...just saw the challenge and got some great shots today that WOULD have been wonderful...but I was shooting RAW today. *kicks own butt* Wish I had know before I went....ugh! My own fault, but normal for me. Meh!

Almost missed the "minimal editing" rule. Had a great idea while installing some updates on my PC, have to skip that (or not).

In minimal, is the "sharpen" command a one time thing, or can it be applied multiple times?
02/21/2014 04:26:27 PM · #17
No, only one time and you can't use any method that is adjustable.

It can be applied several times (NO sliders) and you can boost you camera settings

should we go for best 2 out of 3?

: )

I ask, because I was under the impression that it was one application, but then, on the last minimal challenge, I read someones' notes and they indicated multiple applications.

I do not see any restriction in the Minimal rules that specifies the number of times you can use the Sharpen command, so I it sounds like multiple runs would be legal. But, you might want to PM Bear or sent SC the question.
02/21/2014 05:20:12 PM · #21
I think you can sharpen as many times as you like but you can only resize once.
02/21/2014 05:31:21 PM · #22
Correct: you can only resize once (no "step resizing") but you can hit the "sharpen" button as often as you wish.

Good to know. Thanks!

pander to me. no really, I doubt there is anyone who doesn't normally do the tiniest little something to his or her entry, as a rule.

on the other hand, maybe we should have a challenge that asks us to exploit one particular pp process to absurdity.

That would be fun!
