More than a few more bucks to me... I heard a lot more people enjoying their Rebel than people denying it. So I guess that you may want to stay away from it but a lot of people seem to love it. I respect your opinion but the DRebel commercial success makes it a very good choice for many many people. MHO |

It is made of polycarbonite reinforced with fiberglass. And as we all know that polycarbonite it what bullet proof glass is made of. I still love my Rebel. |

And fiberglass is used widely in boat industry (even high-end boats)... |

| I repect your opinion also , But if you had a choice what would you choose ? I've been a canon guy my whole life , and I'm sure thre rebel is a very good camera , but I know the 10d is better , and know that the 20d is comming out , a lot of people will upgrading and selling there 10d s so if i had the choice i would get the 10d for a few hundred bucks more |

I think that you'll be happy with whichever of these options you choose - all are good, high performance prosumer cameras.
Since there are probably very few here who have much experience of more than one of the models most of us can't fairly give you an opinion on which is best, all we can do is let you know what we like or dislike on the models we have experience with.
I have the Nikdon D70 which I'm very happy with.
I was unsure at first about the physical shape as the body is quite large and felt huge to my hands after using my two Minolta film SLRs for so many years. But I found I got used to it very very quickly and it now feels extremely comfortable to use.
I really like the wide zoom that it's usually bundled with - a very nice lens indeed.
The buttons down the back make it incredibly easy to access and change settings on things like ISO, bracketing and lots more.
I haven't had experience of the Canons enough to say much on them other than that I found them comfortable in my hand but felt it was a touch harder to delve into menus to change some of the settings. That may be purely down to the fact that the Nikon menus etc are more similar to the Minolta film SLRs I have used for years than the Canon ones.

Like many DPC adherents, my camera budget is almost nonexistant, so a new Canon or Nikon is out of the question.
But for those of us that are monetarily challenged, there are amny excellent bargains in used DSLR cameras. I found mine on eBay for $400, 6.2 mp and a Nikon body.
Of course, it weighs nearly 5 pounds! ;}

I was asking the same question a few months ago except mine also included the Pentax *ist. Then I saw this photo that changed my whole perspective. I thought to myself, "Could this many pros be wrong?"
Needless to say, I just bought a Canon 300d on eBay for $750 with the kit lens. I also learned that it's a lot easier to come by used Canon glass than Nikon.
My dos centavos...

No-one can tell you which is the best camera for you, they can only advise as to their personal preference. Go to a good photographic shop and handle each of the models in your price range.
Read reviews and see if they match what you want, if you don't know what you want, then you need to learn more before making that move up to DSLR. It is an important decision and an expensive one which you want to get right first time, it's no good saying in two months time that you should have bought a different model.
I have owned Olympus, Pentax and Canon SLRs in the past, each has a different feel and produces different results. Much is also dependant on the choice of lenses.
I am going to get a DSLR in the next few months, however, I am still not sure which to get. There is no rush, I intend checking out all models, whether Nikon, Olympus, Pentax, Sigma or Canon. Once I have tried the models, read the reviews and seen the results will I make a choice.
I know where my heart lies, with Canon! But I can't just throw a thousand pounds at a camera, so I will make damn sure that I buy what does the best job for me. And that is the whole point...it is what is best, most suited, to you! |

FutureShop won't carry higher-end cameras like the 10D, D70, or D100. They don't even carry the Digital Rebel. Prosumers are the best they do, and not very good ones at that.. at least, our FutureShop doesn't, and I know the Vancouver ones don't, last time I checked.

Actually, they do carry the Rebel (locally and online) and alot of the high end prosumer cameras. They're just usually a model behind. Anyway, FutureShop was just a reference to show that some shops offer more than 14 days for return.

I think is all about what you really want to do with the camera,I own the D-100 and I just love it no matter how many cameras get better rates Than mine.
I think it counts a lot who is behind of the camera and what you want to achive.

I had a soft focus problem, until I adjusted the diopter. Now it's oh so pretty.
I think the biggest difference in the nikon - canon war is personal preference. Go to the camera shop and pick one up. Take a few photos; mess with buttons; get a feel for them.
That's why I chose the camera I did. It's built like a tank, but most people don't care for the weight that comes with that.

| Thanks for all the input. I think I will just have to go to my camera shop and try out a bunch and see how they feel. I have looked at Steve's Digicams and Imaging Resource and those were big helps. But until I actually get my hands on them it is pretty hard to say which one I'll go with! |

In the interest of completeness, you should add Fuji to that list. And in about a month or six weeks Minolta. |

Rumor has it that Nikon is going to make an announcement this week on some new cameras in their lineup. You may want to wait a week or so before purchasing. Granted, whatever they announce won't be available for a few months, but it may provide you with some more choices to make it even more confusing.

| I would say that the soft pictures you saw were setup that way. I shoot the D100 and I get beautiful clear sharp pictures from it. I would say that it is the best dig camera I have ever owned |
