it's interesting to see context-free close-ups when you know they are all from the same place and approximate time (and therefore the same light). It's a hidden but deep connection between fragments.

Quite interesting indeed! I am drawn into the overall scene through each detail. It is as if I have a memory of a place I have never visited. Or did I?

These are really interesting thoughts Don and Ed. Thanks! It's helping me clarify the essay as i approach it. I like the idea of a staccato memory of a place. I think the border/polaroid look is quite helpful with that as well. It's good to have an idea of a final presentation in mind with essays. If i were doing this essay whilst at university, or for a gallery, i think, instead of having them in a book or printed and framed on a wall an interesting way to present them would be to have them printed polaroid size and left in a pile on a table, or in a dusty suitcase, for people to rummage through. They do look quite good laid out next to each other.

What a thrilling characterisation that is of the kind of essay you've outlined. I'm fascinated by photography that is both documentary and interpretive at the same time. The documentary part provides context, a frame of reference. The interpretive part provides the ... the what? The meaning? The art? Very often it's both. My favourite photographer Paolo Pellegrin is the master of that kind of photographic duality.

OK, I finally put together a short essay in a PDF format, and am looking forward to your comments and critique, guys. I am a complete novice at this essay thing, I usually try to tell a story in one photo :). I decided to try out this issuu site that Sarah mentioned, looks promising.

It is better to view it on a desktop or laptop. I made photos to bleed over the whole two-page spread, so tablets and cellphones would only show them correctly in landscape orientation. Also, my iPad and Android phone did not play the background music...

As I said, a very short essay, only 8 photos. I want to go back and shoot a few more frames...

Clive, I really like your series of promenade memories. All five photos are excellent, however it seems to me that the one with the house is a bit odd in this sequence. All others feel urban, and this one is rather suburban, I would even thought mid-western if i did not know the truth :). They might well be very proximal in reality, but in your photos they do not seem that way. Perhaps if you add a few more frames, that disconnect will diminish or disappear in the expanded context.

Beautiful photos Lev. The music seems perfect for the images. I think I might prefer a different style of book that didn't put the crease and highlights through the middle of your beautiful pictures. But maybe there isn't a better choice for the book style. After seeing yours I might have to look at that site myself. I don't have a clue about how to add music or what music a person can use legally but maybe I can figure something out today. Thank you for posting.

Oh wow. Today is the 25th and only 3 more days until deadline. Well, no music or fancy presentation for me. I will have to put them up like my last set. This month sure went fast.

I'm confused now. You say submission ENDS at midnight end of the month (28 Feb)? Well when does submission start?

Here are the rules: work on a photo essay. The photo essay is whatever you want it to be. There are many, many approaches to this genre, as the last challenge showed. It does not have to involve words. The "essay" can simply be multiple pictures interacting with each other.

This thread is your chance to "workshop" a photo essay. You can post individual photos, or a group of photos, and get comments to help you build and refine what you have. I hope that you will comment on the work of others in addition to posting your photos.

At the end of the month, I will start another thread called "February Photo Essay Showcase" where you can post the essays that you worked on during the month... and I believe Clive has an additional treat in store for you. :)


Don - is there some confusion about the 'deadline' for this month's photo essays?
In your initial announcement, you said you would open a new thread to receive completed essays at the end of the month.
I'm assuming that means submissions of essays should be made to that thread at the end of February (and into March). Is this correct?

I'm sure he means that's the deadline for completeion of your project, so it should be ready to upload and post when the "Showcase" thread is posted 3/1/14.

Sorry, I was totally unclear in thought and expression. I hadn't thought about actual dates.

If it's okay with Clive, I will take the most liberal interpretation and go with it.

I'll open the showcase thread on March 1 for people to post their February photo essays.

We'll need a cutoff for Clive's award. I suggest March 3 at turnover time, but I'll let Clive make that call since it's his award.
