I suppose the normal procedure is to gather a "sign up" list, and I will do that if you want, but I really see this as an open thing that anyone can step in and do. On the other hand, I think some people find "signing up" to be a motivator, so I will gladly put your name on a list if you request it.

Here are the rules: work on a photo essay. The photo essay is whatever you want it to be. There are many, many approaches to this genre, as the last challenge showed. It does not have to involve words. The "essay" can simply be multiple pictures interacting with each other.

This thread is your chance to "workshop" a photo essay. You can post individual photos, or a group of photos, and get comments to help you build and refine what you have. I hope that you will comment on the work of others in addition to posting your photos.

At the end of the month, I will start another thread called "February Photo Essay Showcase" where you can post the essays that you worked on during the month... and I believe Clive has an additional treat in store for you. :)

Yes, as i was very kindly given a years membership by Cory in the last essay challenge i thought i would pay that forward in some way. Instead of offering membership i thought i'd give a prize of a photo book to my favourite essay of the month. I'll select this book on the basis of the photo essay/photographer - i'll choose a book that i think the DPC member would like/suit their style or not/or maybe something completely different. Who knows. This won't be a juried selection - just me picking my favourite but i'll endeavour to comment on each essay and give my thoughts. Of course, there are certain practicalities to this - people would have to be willing to send me their postal address - so if anyone is not happy with that it'd be great if they could opt out and let me know. I don't know the price of postage if you live in an obscure region of Mongolia but i think most people here are UK/US/EUROPE/AFRICA/AUSTRALIA so i think it should all be doable.

Thanks, Clive. Wonderful idea Clive, you must be a brilliant, pretty, rich, wonderful, caring, loving guy Clive to be able to want to help the DPC-lot of riff-raff Clive.

But if you do not like to be smooth-talked, and rather want to give to the undeserving, I am more undeserving than most, and certainly most undeserving of all the worthy fat cats here at DPC.

Clive, do I really have to submit a photo-essay before you send me my gift, and will you make sure I can trade it in for AngryBird credits?

Your Best Pal,

merhotofan.

tnun's photo-essay opened a whole world of possibilities for me.

I now remember sets of images that I would never have imagined as photo-essays. It's all your fault!

Someone has to take over my 12-hours-a-day job so that I can do the real important stuff.

I am, indeed, all these things. Apart from rich.

There is a photo of Clive on Facebook, involving a horse of sorts, that is, unto itself, a photo essay. It is frightening. Fascinating, but just a wee bit creepy... :)

That's one of Matilda's photos of me. She's taken to using the little 10 year old Ricoh GR i got recently. I have it set on high contrast black and white and she tends to get a bit Austin Powers- telling me to sit on her rocking horse and smile, jump on her bed, play her toy guitar etc. they would make a good essay but, as Debs has pointed out, they are some of the most disturbing, creepy and frightening photos i've ever seen. It's like they were taken by a three year old David Lynch.

Thanks for doing this Don!

As soon as I had finished the first photo essay, I thought of ideas for more of them.
Nice to have a place to share and workshop these ideas.

Perfect description, Clive. And you should definitely enter an essay on her behalf. Remarkably good, albeit frightening, stuff!

Just submit the DPC Waiver for Minors and let her post her own essay!

oh yes, you really must post this as your/her photo essay.

I'm going to get you banned if you don't. Because I must see this.

I'm starting to outline what I want to do on my Essay. To get a general Idea of length. How many images is too short, and how many is too long? I'm only looking for a ballpark figure.

Most ballparks have a capacity of about 35-45,000 — I think that's too many ... :-)

Do they have to be posted or hosted on DPC?

I'm in - I have a collection of 10 themed photos I've been working on.

No, not at all. In the last one we had people outside posting on Youtube, Vimeo and other places. I think we did thing, though, that it is nice to post on DPC as well. Mine was on Vimeo with music and i was aware that some people might not be able to view it due to slow internet connection or other reasons so i posted a page by page on DPC as well - that also gave people a chance to comment on each image as well.

0 is too short.

100 is too long, for practical reasons.

It might be good to have a discussion on presentation and tips for that. I like the idea of presentation being important - just as if we were framing for a gallery it is interesting and valuable to look at framing-space etc. (jeez - when i did an MA in documentary photography we had a whole 6 month module on it!)

With the last one i did a slideshow which i made in Lightroom and posted on Vimeo. This was all pretty easy, if extremely time consuming, but before i decided to do that i spent a good while searching around for some sort of decent online PDF/book website where i could display it. I really couldn't find anything - the website Paul ( ubique ) used looked interesting and quite good but not quite what i was after. So, any ideas on that would be appreciated.

One thing to consider if you can make PDF files is to make it as as a "book" and post it for people to download and view off-line (what we did for the SoFoBoMo projects). Same with a slideshow; if you don't need (timed) music you should be able to make a slideshow where people have Next/Back buttons to proceed at their own pace, like online newspapers do.

However, I like having them posted here best ...

BTW Don: 0/100 was exactly the answer I would have given if not overcome by levity ... :-)

ETA: pBase.com is a venerable, simple-to-use gallery site, reasonably customizable, reasonably priced ($23/800MB/yr) ... it is easy to link to images there from here.

My galleries ... and a linked photo (quote this post to see simple code format)

Yea, the SoFoBoMo type of thing was what i was after. That was a great way to get on with a book and view it. I'll look into various possibilities for that.

It is good to have them posted here but i think it's great to look at other easy of presentation as well. Doesn't even have to be linear. Animated gifs, animations, apps, i think there is a great opportunity to look at other ways to present whilst also doing the DPC as well.

DPC has held very little interest for me for quite some time. But i just came across this and I might actually bust out my camera to play. I am intrigued.
