Just got it a week ago. Not disappointed in the camera itself. I like it a lot. I am disappointed to learn that most of the differences between the 300D and the 10D would be available on the 300D but they're blocked in the firmware. I really feel this is cheap marketing. Especially since I was having Flash Exposure Compensation with my P&S Powershot S45 (which is a cheaper Canon than the DRebel). I know there's a hacked firmware available but I won't go to it as it would void the warranty. Anyone wanting to share my lost of faith in the world? ;-)

I had a rebel as a backup, and got rid of it in 2 weeks, just because of the flash exposre compensation! I was used to my 10d, and for the extra money I got another!

can you help out with this a bot more?
Where can I get the adjusted firmware, how can I install it & how can I set it back to the default if I need to take it in for service thru the warranty?

When i owned the Sont F828 and upgraded the firmware they said it was not revearsable... a point worth considering.

Before i got the D70 I had a choice between Canon and Nikon and to be honest here the DRebel (Kiss here) felt too cheap and 'plastic' for my liking 10D was way better (and more expensive) the kit lens with the rebel is really crappy IMO im not slagging the camera because its a great machine and very lightweight, I personally prefer a bit of weight to my cameras having always used Contax and Nikon before i went with the D70 because the reviews i had read about the Contax Digital were so bad.

if you are not happy with it, put it all back in the box and send it back complaining about its reliability and ask them to change it, I think if you upgrade firmware it may be irrevearsable.

I am using the hacked firmware and have already reverted back to the Canon version just to make sure it could be done. However, the hacked firmware is great!!! FEC is great and all is good!

Why would you expect Canon to produce two identical cameras where one costs $900 and the other costs $1500?

the firmware has been linked about 40 times, and by Konador.

I stand corrected, but i never knew if it was possible or not.. for sure with the Sony it was not.. In fact after i upgraded i lost the Japanese fonts from it so it only showed the menu in english or euro language.. I sold the camera to my Japanese friend (I live in Japan) but lucky he can read english. :)

Unless you can't. What if the camera's CF card reader breaks, or the camera won't power on?

I have read about many people having their 300D`s fixed with the hacked firmware still installed.
Apparently the warrenty is only void if it`s the hack that broke it.

I've never used the DR, but realistically for the price, even without the firmware hack, I still think it looks pretty good value for money.

What do people expect for the price? It would be like buying a $300 P&S and then complain it has not got detachable lenses.

he 10D is a sensational camera. I definitely prefer it to the D100, I think it is probably neck and neck with the D70 (it still amazes me the difference between that pair, it's as if someone stuck the wrong price on the wrong model). I picked the 10D over both of those, and never regreted it for an instant ...

But personally, had I been looking at the 300D I think I would have spent a very tiny bit more and gone for the D70.

Naturally that assumes no prior investment in lenses.

The D1X features 10 megapixel horizontal x 5 megapixel vertical. I requested a panoramic mode to be implemented by their engineers. But if it doesn't happen I'm hoping some genius will implement it anyway ;)

Dammit now you guys are turning me away from the Rebel ;) .. I hadn't started my research yet but had prospects of buying one before xmas....I would love to have a 10D. I've heard so many great things about that camera. But I don't know where to get one and well I probably can't afford it anyway =/

btw, i'm sorry you're disappointed with your camera. sux =/

I'm disappointed in a couple of the features - FEC is definitely one of them, along with the ability to choose AF mode in manual modes.

The fact is it's the cheapest and first prosumer DSLR on the market. Canon released the 300D, what, 6 months before Nikon released their D70? More?

Let's hope the new 300D (whatever it will be called) fixes a few of these cheap omissions and puts the 300D mkII back to being the best prosumer DSLR as well as the cheapest. :-)

It is possible, I did it when I sent my camera off to Canon for a warranty repair.

I think the reason for the disappointment is that these limitations are not in any way inherent in the camera design or would have made the camera more expensive - they are simply limitations that were introduced to better define the line between the 300D and the 10D. And they also make you believe that you buy an inexpensive camera, but once you want to do serious stuff like wireless flash control, you have to buy additional equipment, or at least the more expensive version of stuff (e.g., the 550EX instead of the 420EX if you want flash exposure compensation).

When I decided I wanted a DSLR, this was the reason for me to chose the D70 instead. I just didn't want to spend a lot of money and then feel that I had been cheated. That, and the fact that I absolutely hate startup-lag, which the D70 also doesn't have (I also believe that that was done on purpose in the 300D, I can't imagine what the camera is doing for three seconds - it's not like it needs to extend its lens barrel or anything).

Canon may have the edge technologically, but I believe Nikon have realized that taking their customers for fools is not a good idea.

Actually I believe it does perform some startup operations.
