The prizes:
1. A year's free membership, provided by Cory
2. A Posthumous ribbon of some kind

The rules:

1. Create an original photo essay.
2. The photos may have been seen or used elsewhere, but they must be your creations.
3. The essay itself must be new (on your honor). You assemble the pieces for this challenge.
4. If there is accompanying text, it must also be original or properly quoted.
5. On January 13th, I will start a separate thread for posting your photo essays.
6. Do not post entries until January 13th. The deadline is midnight Eastern Standard Time on January 14th.
7. No rulesets. No date range. This is an art project. The rule is to not plagiarize, and not break copyright, as with any art. Copying something cool from the Internet will get you a ribbon in a regular challenge, but it will disqualify you here if you get caught.

The judges:

posthumous will make the final decision, but he will consult a panel of judges, including the benefactor, Cory. The rest of the judges will be announced later in this thread. Panel judges will be able to heap praise wherever they wish and create honorable mentions.

This thread is for discussion of the challenge, and questions. But I am not going to define "photo essay" for you, and I'm not going to tell you how many photos are required. Go with what your project needs, not what I need. I'm open to different interpretations.

Too cool, off to feel a theme..

A photo essay would be very challenging for me, since I see in the abstract. I need all the help I can get! I am wondering if anyone would help me with the difference between a photo documentary and a photo essay. I'm thinking a photo documentary would capture some details about what happened, while a photo essay would present some idea of the effect of what happened. Maybe?

Oooooh, very interesting things happening all over DPC!

A couple questions Don.
Are there location requirements, as in stored here in DPC, or can we link to say a Flickr folder?
Is there a size limitation?

from Wikipedia's definition (here's the first line) you should be good to go with whatever you decide to enter, Pixelpig:

Wikipedia: A photo-essay (or photographic essay) is a set or series of photographs
that are intended to tell a story or evoke a series of emotions in the viewer.

Imagine having a wall, you can say anything, about anything, how ever you want to say it photographically..

Edit out incorrect word.

Nobody loves Wiki more than me, but still...for me half the fun of a project like this is talking about it while in the planning stages.

no limitations. Yes you can link to elsewhere.

I'm in as an intending entrant. Great idea, thank you Cory & Don.

My own interpretation of a photo essay: a cohesive set of photographs, with or without captions, where each image in the set is informed by all of the others. So more than the sum of its parts.

I hope lots of DPC people will try this because it's a very good way for different styles of photography to meet on a common field.

I see this as somewhat akin to the SoFoBoMo projects which ran for a few years ... *maybe* I'll start working on the project I was supposed to do for a November SC ... ;-)

This is an nice way to mix it up. Now how to begin? Look forward to seeing what everybody comes up with. My only concern is the jury, during the selection process, will know who the photographers are. No big deal and that won't change what I submit. Thanks Don, Cory and others involved.

Anonymity would be ideal but it's impractical in a side challenge :(

I'll take this. I like it short-&-sweetness. Thanks.

Suggestion: use someone's account who is not entering to 'store' all the images, then that person posts them all in the 'voting' thread. It would preserve anonymity of the entrants.

I won't be entering but I have a fair chunk of free DPC storage space if you'd like to utilise it.

Great idea!

I value anonymity but a photo essay presents unique difficulties, and doing it thru a third party might be limiting to some, like someone using a flickr photo set. And it's all or nothing, not fair to do a partially anonymous challenge.

right. let's not complicate things any further.
12/27/2013 11:43:13 PM · #22
I don't see the need for anonymity in this one, anyway. Don's as impartial as any judge I've ever worked with, and he'll be making the final decision anyway. And, really, speaking as a veteran of judging these things, it's just not that hard to be impartial, it really isn't.

This looks really interesting, just wondering if there needs to be text, I would like to do it with only captions if possible.. Got a theme just need photographs:) thanks for setting this up!

Bump, because there doesn't seem to be as much interest in this yet as I'd expected/hoped.

It's a very good way for the various 'camps' of photography at DPC to reveal to each other a deeper look at how we each see the world through a lens. One photograph is readily dismissed, or underestimated. But a group of related photographs, attempting to expand on a particular point of view about something, gives some more room for reflection and appreciation. I hope to learn more about the story-telling potential of styles of photography that aren't my own, by my being more or less forced to take a longer look. So please, don't think that this is just an allegedly arty-farty excercise for the posthumous crew. Cory isn't one of those, and he had the brilliant idea to do this. Give it a shot: you may be pleasantly surprised at yourself. I want to see essays by Christophe, Margaret, Pam, Wendy, Jen, and all my photographic 'opposites'. I know (approximately) what my own circle are likely to do. But I'm more eager about appreciating what the people that I don't often connect with are able to do. I hope to be thrilled. And I'll bet that I am, if you will take a shot at it. Thank you.

Been meaning to sign up for this. I'm in. Not sure how feasible it is within the time frame since I'm travelling on business the whole of next week, but I like a challenge and have some ideas that may work.
