Sometimes things just don't work like they're supposed to. :)

Thanks everyone for the feedback (positive and negative) on the voting requirement. We've decided to remove the requirements until we can come up with a better system. Specifically, users who participate regularly shouldn't be punished for lack of availability during a week they want to submit. Also, there are a lot of (ahem, lame) users who have left really poor, useless comments recently, and I fear this has something to do with the requirement. To those users, you suck.

To everyone else ... sorry :) We'll get this thing right!

Guess I have to figure out how to un-vote now. ;-)

Seriously, there a lot of site admins that would fall into an ego trap and keep an unpopular policy in place rather than admit it wasn''t working the way they''d intended. The fact that you guys are willing to take a step back and rework something like this is a major reason this site is and will be so successful. Keep up the good work.

-Terry

I appreciate your attitude and flexibility. Thanks for the change, now I feel like I will try to figure out a more meaningful way to add my comments.

THANK YOU!!! now I don''t have to vote on two hundred pictures in one day(I am a master at procrastinating!) I also noticed that my voting average is higher and the comments are much better.

Thanks all. Let me just say that I reeeally encourage you to leave good comments for photos. Those help us grow as photographers so much. I'd personally trade 50 votes for 10 comments any day.

Lots of good things are coming to the site soon, so stay tuned.

As if I don't already "stay tuned" several hours a day. Drew, dear, what are you trying to do to us? (see thread "addicted" yea, i could link to it, but i need to check my score!)

I'll trade you some 1's for some 10's

Hey Drew,

I bitch a lot, A LOT! But this is a great site. I am really trying to leave comments that say why I voted a certain why lately, and that take time. Thanks for removing the requirements.

Also, I usually just concentrate on the negative aspects, because if people are here to learn, than I will say what you did wrong first, and hopefully still say what I liked. I try to leave a score, so you will no if I am nit picking, or I think the photo is seriouslly flawed.

I voted for the first time when the voting requirement came into effect and I found it hard work, but I also enjoyed it a hell of a lot.
I probably won't vote on 95% of all the pics in a challenge now,
but I will make the effort to vote on a good percentage.
Thanks for a great Site.

DITTO!! I'm addicted i.e. it's not even 6:30am and thunder woke me up, so instead of going back to sleep, figured I'd just pop in and check my score...but I couldn't be happier to have found this site. It's a blast and all your hard work and efforts seem to be paying off! :) Can't wait to see the other goodies you have in store for us!

Thanks for all the fun!

I agree that it is the right decision. I hope that you will give consideration to having two challenges per week so that the number of submissions may be reduced on either challenge, providing more opportunity to vote on all submissions to that challenge.

Thanks for the change of heart! I am also trying to leave plenty of comments, and vote on all of them unless interrupted by circumstances. I'm still a real novice, so don't always feel able to make intelligent negative comments. I am mostly confining myself to mentioning the part of the photo that struck me positively. Keep on clickin'!

mmm... i guess you are eager to submit your next weeks entry... that's why you voted that much... I was thinking that i cannot submit next entry because of the number of pics i voted...

thanks Drew.

Thanks Drew! I was just about to take myself out of the running here because I was unable to vote on so many pics due to time constraints. That was an enormous amount of voting and commenting. Would rather quality than quantity in comments - more meaningful and helpful I think.

Glad I have a cable modem and have never had the problems with freezing people mention, it take me hardly any time to go through the pictures first time around. Still, this might be the for the best.

I think this is probably the best for everybody - although I hope to keep voting for all the photos in each challenge. I appreciate your efforts in making this a better site. It's great now, and will only continue to get better.
I think one of the challenges here is to find a way to increase the valuable comments. Though I will say that 2-3 good comments from photographers I respect are better that 20-30 "nice shot" comments. (BTW, I also like good comments from non-photographers, but I don't know how to judge their credibility.)
One thought - I'd like to see the detailed votes (and comments?) divided and shown between photographers and non-photographers.

Just keep in mind that the 'Non-Photographers' may be very very experienced with SLR cameras. I expect this of the ones who vote on a lot of picturesa nd make full sized comments. I mean it is a lot of time to spend for someone without interest. =)
