On Monday morning, we lost our dog Maggie, a Border Terrier, and a member of our family for 18 years.

My wife and I were working out in the garden on Sunday. Maggie was romping through the grass reliving her puppy-hood and then ventured out onto the dock and became confused. She wandered back and forth and ultimately stepped off into space. Both my wife and I saw her fall and we jumped into the lake to rescue her.

She swam with all her strength but could not keep her mouth and nose above the water. When we pulled her out, she seemed winded, disoriented, but otherwise okay.

Over the next few hours she began to have trouble breathing. We took her to the animal hospital where they gave her oxygen and various medications. At 3:00 AM Monday morning, we got a call from the vet. She had fought a good fight but her heart had finally given out.

Poor Maggie. I feel so sad for her.

All this week she has been close to my thoughts, to my heart, and to my tears. I am sorry to burden you all with my sadness. But I felt I needed to tell someone. Forgive me, please.

There is no need to apologize .. I know how you feel :( I have 2 cats, a hamster and 2 birds on the way .. so I know all about the joys of pets. They are family and I understand how you must be feeling .. I'm sorry it happened the way it did .. but it sounds like she had a great life and you should be proud of yourself for giving her that. Unfortunately a lot of animals don't have that luxery ...

I would love to see some pictures too =)

No need for apologies Charles; but 18 years, and with folks who so obviously cared for her ... well, what more could a dog ask for?

So sorry to hear of your loss. It really does hurt, we lost our dear terrier mix, Bob, after having him 15 years and it really did leave a void in our life. Hopefully, in a few months the sadness will lift enough to think about another pet, this really does seem to help the grief. We adopted a 2 year old Cairn Terrier 6 months after Bob's death and life does feel normal again. Now she is precious to us, too.

Your dear Maggie had a good long life.

Charles, there is no need to appologize regarding this post. This is what a family (of sorts) is for - Been there, done that.
Sharing in this manner is a good way to cope and deal with a loss, and I for one, have found it easier to deal with by sitting down and writing it out, somehow taking a little of the overwhealming emptyness away.

We're hear to listen, share and help however needed.
Life really comes down to memories - keep them and cherish them as they can never be taken away.

My Condolences.

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.

When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.

All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.

You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

Thoughts and prayers from myself, Nimitz, and Tico. And I promise Maggie won't be lonely. Satin, Strife, Spunky, Monroe, Tiffany, and Trouble will all have been waiting for her when she crossed Rainbow Bridge. They'll make sure she has company until you guys can play together again.

My condolences to you Charles on your loss of Maggie. I found it very hard when my cat of 17 years died a few years ago. It's a difficult time and my thoughts are with you and your family.

Charles, don't apologize for sharing your grief with us - we are all honored that you think enough of us to do so. As many others have mentioned, Maggie enjoyed many wonderful years with you and more importantly, she enjoyed a life of being loved and there is nothing more precious in this world! Physically she has moved on but she still lives in your heart. Take comfort in knowing that the love never dies!

Charles, my thoughts are with you and your wife. Maggie was a very special part of your lives, a member of your family. It is so very hard to deal with the grief when they go. She was lucky to have spent her life with you where she was so cherished.......and you were blessed to be able to share her 18 yrs of joy, you must have so many wonderful memories of your lives together. They do leave their footprints on our souls and stay in our hearts forever.

I think we all understand the need to talk about things like this. I am saddened by your story, but just know Maggie's in a great place, and there's a really cool Fox Terrier named Ruby up there playing with her now, I know it. I know the pain may seem unbearable at times, and sometimes you do just have to give in to the tears. 18 years is more than a lot of dogs get in this world, and I'm sure she stayed with you as long as she did because of the love you gave her... and that love will always be there, too. Just knowing that keeps me going when I start thinking of my Ruby. The memories she gave me (and the gazillions of photos of her) are cherished every day.

You're in my prayers.
